  1. Rick, I’ve just received word from NWA that my flight on 8/10 has been cancelled and new flights have been scheduled. Was leaving MHT at 6:02am arriving GEG 12:17pm. New itinerary has me leaving 4:15pm arriving 10:37pm. Not even close to the 4 hour/$400.max you mention. What’s the best way to get $ for my major inconvenience (also includes car rental changes)? Thanks for your help. Stephen Viti

  2. Stephen,

The $400 is for “denied boarding” compensation if you get INVOLUNTARILY bumped from your flight the day of your flight. It does not cover changes that the airlines make before your departure date.

This is covered by the contract of carriage and Northwest’s contract allows them to change your itinerary pretty much at their whim. If you contact Northwest they might be willing to give you a full refund (I have had other airlines offer this) so you could rebook elsewhere (which may be more expensive), but they are not required to according to the contract which everyone accepts by purchasing your ticket.

I wish there was a better option at this point. You are one of the “lucky” ones that actually found out your original flight was canceled ahead of time, several have sent me notes that they showed up to the airport to find out they missed their rescheduled flight because they had not been notified.

We will be writing at length about everyones rights in the coming weeks so stay tuned. Our goal is to make sure you are prepared for every possible eventuality.

  3. I have this anxiety of being trapped in a plane on a runway or at a gate for hours like what has happened too many times recently. What are our rights and can we get off the plane in anyway?? Is claustrophobia considered a handicap when booking your flight and seat selection? Thanks!

  4. Hi Jean,

Let me do some checking and I’ll write a comment to address the claustrophobia issue.

    Cheers,

    Rick

  5. My husband and I are going to Puerto Vallarta in mid March. When is the best time to buy airline tickets? The fares are pretty good now but maybe they’ll be better if I wait. Your thoughts? Thanks!
