Smokin Airline Ticket Deals

Filed under: Deals, Airfare Sales — Rick Seaney @ 11:00 pm

smokinhot.jpg

I get the opportunity 3 times a day for Domestic U.S. & Canada to review a report our software kicks out with the absolute cheapest deals that are filed during each airfare feed 10am, 12:30pm and 8:00pm weekdays (5 times a day for international)
I thought it might be fun to post them once in the blog and see if people like the idea and if so we will have a deal tool in FareCompare.com (so put in your comments one way or the other by clicking the comments link the bottom).

If you sign up for airfare email alerts you will get these deals when they happen, you just won’t see them all in a list in this form.

I think this might give you an idea of what sorts of changes we see each day.

Many of these fares will only be around for a short period because they are “tweaks”, others are just plain “Crazy Ivans“.

Maybe you can even challenge me to some airline code and city code trivia in the comments (airfares are filed by city code, which is different from airport code and be careful I have been doing this a while …).

All prices are before tax which is approximately $21 roundtrip for non-stops and $42 roundtrip for connecting.

So here are todays deals where prices dropped at least $100 below the previous low price in the city pair:

Trivia:

City Code DTT - Detroit (airport code is DTW)

Airline Code FL - Airtran Airlines

All the “Y” first letter city codes are in Canada

Origin Destination Airline Fare Code Advance Purchase Price Savings

  2. Can you provide an option for your customers to get these reports in the way you have shown above? Also, can you add a feature to allow customers to get email alerts with fares that have the best overall savings?

    Thanks!

  3. Can I receive international flight deals flying from Tokyo? Narita Airport?

    Comment by Karen — August 15, 2007 @ 11:27 pm

  4. Do you have a way to know what the abbreviations stand for?

    Comment by Karen — August 15, 2007 @ 11:29 pm

  5. Hi Karen,
The abbreviations are for city codes (3 letter) and airlines (2 letter).
You can use the following link to look up a city code on our site.
For City Codes (just substitute the 3 letter code in caps, this example is Tokyo)
    http://www.farecompare.com/flights/-TYO/city.html
For Airline Codes (just substitute the 2 letter code, in caps)
    http://www.farecompare.com/flights/-DL/airline.html
You can add international alerts from Tokyo in our alerts section of your profile. We only have international to the U.S. and Canada and vice versa at the moment (we don’t have Tokyo to Europe for example yet)

  8. Hey,

I need to fly up PA from NC. I live near Greensboro, NC and can fly out of Greensboro,NC (GSO), Raleigh Durham (RDU) or even Charlotte, NC.

I want to fly up in September where I can visit Fri, Sat and Sun coming back Sunday night or Monday. I can leave out on Thursday if needed for better fare.

What suggestions do you have on getting the best fare? The cheapes round trip I’ve seen as of today was $199.60 round trip including taxes.

    thank you,
    Kristie

  10. It’s ok but don’t let the emails become spam… I am not sure that I want to receive 5 emails a day for International flights (which I am most interested in). How does this really differ from the normal FareCompare alerts - I really like those….

When I get the special from UA every couple of days they are almost spam for the I am only interested in certain ones.

    I hope I am making sense…

FareCompare alerts really are the best (for me….)

  14. I’d like this format! I was wondering though if there could be a feature that could provide non-stop fares from a city, say Miami, to anywhere on a specific date? Many times travelers get the itch to go somewhere that’s simple, quick, easy, cost effective and sometimes at the spur of the moment…

  15. my home airport is gdl and I frequently use yyz, mostly to the states, I’m registered for fare alerts with iad, dfw but seem to get very few bulletins thru the year and always with minimal savings. If it were possible to get a regular alert with all specials out of gdl and/or yyz that would be great

truly enjoy your site, thx Jack

  16. If you can filter the info to just send the cities that I am interested in that would be great.

  17. I think any alert that gives your readers a heads up to great deals is wonderful! I’d love to see it happen. Perhaps you can do some type of registration process so readers only receive emails for what they are interested in (i.e. domestic only, international only, both, etc.) to address the “spam” concerns.

  30. I like this a lot. Not really sure how to go about finding these fares, do we have to enter the fare code? I guess most are expired by now. I travel all the time from DTW to YUL and lately it’s been 500+ at the cheapest. I saw the AC flight up there but it’s no longer available :( I look forward to getting more of these.

    Comment by Dan — August 16, 2007 @ 7:17 am

  31. Rick,

I love the site and the blog! Since you’re able to show advance purchase info, is it possible to show the minimum stay requirement associated with each fare? I often look for fares that have a no minimum stay, and it’s usually trial and error or endlessly scanning through fare rules.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Would love the following alerts: flights I have flagged as my favorites from my home base that drop considerably during a day, any flights from my home base that are under $100 round trip, and lastly, non stop flights from my home base that may not be on my list, but will tempt my urge for spontaneous travel.

    Comment by Marianne — August 16, 2007 @ 9:07 am

  43. Wow!
What great questions all, let me answer a few here in then grab some water to I can get to the rest.
    1) Filtering Your Alerts
There are 2 types of Airfare Email Alerts, City Pair (between 2 cities only) and “Departure” (Get me out of town) from your departure city to top 50 cities or to all 400+ cities.
If you are getting a lot of alerts, you have probably signed up for the departure alerts, if you only want a certain set of cities you can remove the departure alert and set up as many city pair alerts as you like.
    2) Clicking Through on Alerts “Fare Not Loaded”
There are only a handful of companies that process the raw airfare data directly from the airlines. We are one of those handful, we process it and send it out in alerts hours before it hits the ticket booking sites.
This is important because only 5-15% of the airplanes will fly at the cheapest price. If you are first to know you have the best shot to be in that group.
We are working on a countdown clock so you will know when the items are loaded for ticketing. Stay tuned.
    3) Not Able to Purchase on Alerts “Sold Out”
Airlines publish THEIR airfares 8 times a day (3 domesticly and 5 internationaly on week days, a couple of times on the weekends).
The Airlines closely control how many seats they will release at THEIR lowest price point. They decided on a case by case basis (in theory everytime a search query is made — there are tens of millions of travel quote queries each day). They can and DO change their minds often throughout the day. The airlines make this decision on hundreds of variables like how well tickets sold last year, how well they are selling for a particular flight now, how many business travelers to the estimate they can charge more for etc.
So both airfares change and so does the “seat inventory”. We are working on ways to better handle the situations when seats are hard to find, its a complex and obviously frustrating issue. Please bare with us as we continue to hone and refine the technology.

    Comment by Rick Seaney — August 16, 2007 @ 9:35 am

  44. This is great! I’ve been a long time subscriber of your alerts, which I read faithfully, and I’ve always wondered what the raw data looked like. I really like seeing the Fare Code, but I know that most sites don’t let you see the fare code, at least not without practically booking the fare. And if there was a way to filter the above data for my city/airline combo, I would be thrilled.

  45. Flying to Rome at the end of May 2008,any good deals on the horizon?Right now all the flights are empty and the fares are ridiculously high and are rising weekly.Should I wait or bite the bullet and pay these prices?

  51. Rick,
Amazing yet again! I would love this service. I’d also love to see filtering for specific cities, as well as a list of non-stops from selected cities, especially with fare sales going on! This would be cool for those times when you know you want to take a trip, but dates are flexible and money not-so-much!
Thanks again for all your great work. Love you guys.

  54. I live in Western Massachusetts and fly frequently to the Caribbean, especially St. Martin. Fares can range up to $1,000 for a coach seat. I have driven as far as Philadelphia to snag a $251RT, taxes included, flight to St. Martin. Can you develop a chart, or search vehicle, showing a destination (say St. Martin) with the lowest airfare from all the Northeastern airports? I already subscribe to e-mail fare alerts and this would enhance an already great product. This chart could be also useful for travel to Europe.

    Keep up the great work!!

    Comment by Kim — August 16, 2007 @ 7:36 pm

  57. Wow!!!, here goes, trying to answer as many as possible:
    56) Kim, CA to US is now on the list
    55) Pat, you are in biz fare 3 day advance purchase land, price will be $400+, Sun Country I believe flies into SFO from MSP, you might try them, going to be tough on that one
    54) Bob, I have put your request on our feature list
53 & 52) Karen & Laurie, noted and on the list as well
    51) Barb, thanks for the kind words, tie-ing in non-stops and sales is a great idea, look for that one soon
    50) Bob, thanks for the support
    49) Erin, you might want to sign up for departure alerts from SEA it will send emails to all cities from SEA - FareCompare.com Airfare Email Alerts
    48) Emily, with this response you can expect it soon :)
    47) Ben, I’ll definitely send you a note, all you absolutely must check out one of my favorite blogs Shoppers Bit Back Consumerist.com, Ben and his team are gurus.
    46) Cindy, noted :)
    45) Al, Rome is by far on of the most expensive cities in Europe to travel to. I have sent several people to check out EuroFly from New York and they report good prices and fair service. If you are adventurous take a cheap flight to Dublin and then RyanAir down from their. May season prices are a bit lower than peak summer but are pretty expensive, if you can go a tad bit earlier you might be able to catch the season price break. These trips are going to get a lot cheaper once the Open Skies pact between E.U. and U.S. starts officially next March, it will take a while but we will see a lot more competition for trans-atlantic flights, later in 2008 and early 2009.
    44) Jennifer, the new tool will have several filters for you as well as the full fare rule text
    42) Marianne see my post in 43 :)
    41) Lee, we will be changing the alerts output soon to include both text and html which will allow us more flexiblity to put more information in the alert content
    40) Madeline, (btw one of my favorite names) noted
    39) Norener, remember European flights have $250 built in for fuel surcharges and taxes. Your best bet from ATL to LON is obviously Delta (its hub) you can fly there for under $500 out the door on Tue/Wed in December & January (except for Xmas)
    38) Sue, the tool we roll out will include both domestic and international
    37) Luella, MCO-LAX is running $320 for connecting and $420 for non-stop in late January, I would wait for a while on thos prices they are likely to drop dramatically in the next 2-3 months.
36 & 35) Jane, Sherri codes in the alerts is now on the list and definitely will be doing the tool
    34) Don, we will definitely include europe, you can check out the maps now from our home page which takes you worldwide from your departure airport.
    32) Jill, thanks for the support, stay tuned
    31) Mike, thanks for the support and look for the min stay number and also the full text rules on this new tool
    30) Dan, we will make it easy to click through in the tool so you can quickly check out flights
    29) Rebecca, it has been tough out of PIT, I hope someone will step in and take up the slack. Hang in there
    28) Gina, thanks for the support
    27) Judy, ouch, Northwest Hub to Hub, American Airlines was fighting with NW a bit recently, if you fly on Tuesdays 14 days out in the next 2 months you can get in for $218 connecting and $250 non-stop out the door
    26) Pat, agreed, more deals is in :P
    25) Gary, Thanks for the support, stay tuned
    24) Janet, MEM-OMA is running $240 on Tuesdays and $260 out the door on other days until November. This isn’t a great price, but I have seen worse, tough call on this one to wait. I am a gambler normally on these, but I wouldn’t be upset if you pulled the trigger at that price. OMA is a smaller airport which normally pays a $40-80 premium unfortunately.
    23) Rob/Roy, The airlines have more control over prices than we do :), we just try to level the playing field. You should by RIGHT NOW you can get in non-stop EWR-FLL for $130-$155 on JetBlue and Continental in Februrary.
    22) Nicole, we will make it easy to look up the codes :), I am surprised no one challenged me to a city code trivia …
    21) Phillip, will do
    20) Brian, it is very choppy right now to Europe, there are a few deals for November in places like London and Dublin, depends on your departure and destination, but you should get a decent deal (remember $250 is baked into the price for fuel charges and taxes)
    19) Angela, thanks for the support and yes we have the information for international as long as it touches the U.S. and Canada, our outbound U.S. is better, we are still working on several currency issues for originating outside U.S./Canada.
    18) Lynda, MCI-PVR $470 is a decent price, but not a great one, you should be able to get in the low $400’s out the door on thursdays in March (assuming spring break is in March?) Frontier is your best bet
    17) Rhonda, definitely we’ll have the tool, I need to think more of how we might deliver this via email w/o being a nuisance
    16) Nancy, definitely
    15) Jack, you should be able to setup alerts from GDL and YYZ, be sure and do it in the international alerts section of the email and not the domestic
    14) Sue, matching up with flight schedules is both doable (since we process worldwide flight schedules) and noted as well in later comment. Good idea
    13) Marilyn, thanks for the support, stay tuned for more :)
    12) Lee, you can sign up for international alerts from Canada to Europe, be sure and use the International alert add area (not domestic) http://www.farecompare.com/email
    11) Vincent, those prices are running in the mid $500’s out the door for the next 3 months, don’t seem much slack in that price unfortunately
    10) Howard, we are very aware of trying not to inundate people, thus the city pair alerts, so don’t worry this issue will be a high priority for us (no need to waste our compute time and your valuable time) when its not needed
8 & 9) Kristie, $199 is not too bad out the door, for GSO-MDT, CLT-MDT is cheapest in September at $178 out the door on NW connecting $20 more for non-stop.
    7) Mike, noted
    6) Leslie, SFO-BOS, is going to be on the Virgin American Route schedule sooon, and prices will drop, you are looking at low $300’s out the door now for September/October which isn’t too bad.
    4 thru 1) See other comment 5)
Thanks for all the comments, I’ll try my best to give quick advice.

  62. Please, please, please do consider an e-mail option with this sort of fare posting! I love your subscription service, but currently am signed up for way too many departure cities in an effort to catch this kind of data. Having this all consolidated in one would be so useful for trip planning and mileage running.

  63. I would love to have a page to access the lowest fares from any city to any city that can be sorted by ppm (price per mile) or savings or etc. Also a email alert for the 10? 20? (optional number) lowest fares anywhere would be a great option to have.

Thanks for all your hard work and a great site,
    Rainwolf
