On-Time Departures (31-August): Name Changes, Bourdain, and the Super Bowl

Filed under: Weekly Roundup — Rick Seaney @ 9:30 pm

Looking for something good to read over the Labor Day weekend? Here are some offerings from some of my favorite sites and bloggers:

Pre-Season’s Over, Let’s Talk Super Bowl

With kickoff less than a week away, it’s already time to start thinking about the Super Bowl. Not necessarily who is going to make it or which QB is going to mishandle a snap on a field goal to cost his team a trip to the next round (aagh!), but how you’re going to get to the big game.

Fly Away Cafe offers some great tips on how to avoid overpaying for tickets and how to make your trip as painless as possible even if your team fades mid-season and doesn’t make it into the post-season. With any major event like the Bowl, it’s good to get started early. Despite what we might think sometimes, airlines aren’t stupid, and you could see significant fare increases and package prices as the season progresses.

Buy Me Some Peanuts and Crackerjacks

Continuing with the sports theme, Gadling breaks down the best ballpark food in America (as reported by the Sporting News). See if your favorite ballpark had the burgers, brats, or beers to make the list.

If you want to indulge in all these favorite treats, check the schedule and start planning your trip. It’s a good idea to stay flexible, and there are even quick and easy ways that you and your buddies can arrange to meet in Fenway, Wrigley, or anywhere else where delicious ballpark dogs are served.

Sorry Bob, That’ll be $100

Chris Elliot has another great post on another way the airlines grab as much as they can from passengers. This particular policy involves a name change on a ticket: “Ticket change fees must be a major source of revenue for the airlines. How else do you explain Bob Bennett’s recent e-mail exchange with United Airlines, in which the carrier insisted it charge a $100 fee for changing the name on his ticket from Bob to his legal name, Robert?”

Soon, I hope to take an in-depth look at all the little fees we face (sometimes without even knowing it) when we decide to fly.

Anthony Bourdain in High-Def

For those of you who love to watch the Travel Channel, get ready to see it more clearly than ever. The channel will soon make the switch to HD, which should make viewers feel even more like they’re off to a new exotic destination every time they tune in. Visit endgadgetHD for more details.

What’s in a Name?

Last week I highlighted the Continental naming rights story in which Continental said it would remove its name from the Nets stadium in the Meadowlands. Well, now is your chance to come up with a name of your own. The Daily Record reports, “The New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority is looking for proposals for the naming rights to the Continental Airlines Arena.” Does the Rick Dome have a nice ring to it?

Enjoy the Long Weekend!
