Steve Fossett

Filed under: Pilots — Rick Seaney @ 2:54 pm

The FAA is reporting that a plane piloted by adventurer and aviation world-record holder Steve Fossett has been missing since Monday.

Fossett has been called a modern-day Magellan, due to his ability to seek out and pass new milestones in the world in aviation. He has been an integral part of Virgin Galactic’s development and has been right there on a number of Richard Branson’s record-breaking balloon rides.

Fossett also holds the record for the first solo, non-stop, non-refueled airplane trip around the world, set in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer in 2005.

Fossett took off from an airstrip about 30 miles south of Yerington, Nevada, and the current search is centered around Nevada.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone close to Steve, and all of us our hoping for a safe return for a true aviation pioneer.
