On-Time Departures (16-Nov): Superferry, Superjumbo, Super-mini

December 17, 2007 | Posted in: Weekly Roundup
I tried to cover a lot of travel stories this week on the blog, but I know I didn’t get everything. Luckily, some of my favorite bloggers were busy at work. Take a minute to see what they were writing about this week, and then visit their sites to learn more. There’s a Superferry, a Super Jumbo jet, a super miniskirt and more.

Hawaii Super Ferry Resumes Service

In it’s short time on Earth, the Hawaii Superferry has seen it’s share of trouble. The Superferry began as a new way for people to travel between the Hawaiian Islands, but it has become a lighting rod for controversy. As reported on World Hum, environmentalists believe the Superferry is a danger to Marine life, and environmental groups were able to stop Superferry service for weeks. However, until an true environmental investigation is carried out, the Superferry will be able to resume service.

More Woes for Airbus

Airbus has encountered a range of problems over the past year. Delays and reduced order numbers on the A380 “Superjumbo” have clouded many of the manufacturer’s accomplishments of late. Then, an Airbus A340 has slammed into a wall and injured 10 people during engine tests on Thursday. Visit Gadling to get a full report on the incident and a deeper look at the problems Airbus can’t seem to shake.

The Truth is Out There

Pilots and aviation personnel are among a group of people who are calling for the government to reopen the (Blue) book on UFOs: “We want the US government to stop perpetuating the myth that all UFOs can be explained away in down-to-earth, conventional terms…” (BBC)

I’m interested to see where this story goes once Virgin Galactic is up and running. I smell an alien-themed Branson PR stunt coming.

The Miniskirt Story Returns

The young woman once deemed “too sexy for Southwest” is back in the news, as she is set to pose in Playboy. My colleagues at Standard Upright Position cover all the tawdry details.

Happy Geography Week!

I’m sure you’ve all been carrying on major celebrations in honor of Geography Week. If you haven’t, visit Fly Away Cafe to get a brief geography lesson and to learn about some spectacular destinations on all seven continents. If you didn’t remember there were seven continents, I don’t think a week focusing on the importance of geography will help you make up for lost time.

Have a Great Weekend!
