Advice from TSA: Pack NEATLY

November 19, 2007 | Posted in: Holiday Travel, Security
Our friends at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have some advice for us slobs during Thanksgiving travel days: pack neatly. No, it has nothing to do with offending their esthetic sensibilities; this could actually help those long lines move a lot faster, and we’re all in favor of that. Keep reading and I’ll tell you why we should all become neatniks.

This is part of the TSA’s new “Simpli-FLY” program. Okay, so why pack neatly? Well, we are talking carry-on bags here, and the more neatly those are packed, the easier it’ll be for the screeners to scan them quickly, and pass you and your bag out of the line. A messy bag takes longer to scan. They suggest we all pack in “neat layers.” And they have a lot more quick-and-easy-ideas for those “fly once in a blue moon” passengers; just click this TSA link for tips and more.

How nice for them. If only they would repay the courtesy. Actually, I’m fairly good about disassembling myself and my bags to pass through TSA screening quickly, but then it takes about 2-3 minutes to repack and reassemble myself.

It’s far worse for my checked baggage. I’m quite careful to pack in a relatively orderly fashion, often trying to cushion more fragile items on the occasions I need to check them. But I’ve lost track of the number of times that my bags arrive at their destination in complete shambles, with my belongings crumpled and mixed about. What were they doing, sniffing my underwear?
