In France, the effects of the strike by transport workers and others is now being felt at Paris’ 2-airports as well as the airport at Marseille, both of which are seeing delays. I’ve BEEN there. Let me tell you about it… |
Strikes and France seem to be eternal soul mates …
At least this strike is occurring at an off-peak travel time; back in ‘98, I was working in France during a work stoppage while the nation was hosting the World Cup finals (I was in Nantes), and that was some mess. I thought I might be stranded, but thanks to the efforts of a kindly grandmother (who was vastly amused at my ignorance-abetted by my inability to speak French), I finally made it out by train. This, of course, was after I ended up with a tight connection in Paris (having to take the Metro to the Northern Station when I arrived at the Southern), clear across town from the right one. Yes, some consider me a “travel expert”, I can get you there cheap, but you don’t want my luck when it comes to being delayed, stranded or in that case “struck”.

I actually was just in Paris during the transit strike. The only inconvenience was that the RER B from CDG was not running, but the AirFrance busses and the Roissy Bus were both operational. The metro was working well enough that I could get around town.
I was also scheduled to fly to Paris in 1998 during that strike, as well - ended up flying via London on AirIndia. The French may strike a lot, but fortunately, a lot of companies have great contingency plans now!
