If you ask the folks at Airbus, their trip to Minnesota on Tuesday with an Airbus A380 superjumbo jet at their side was not a sales call. They simply wanted the good people of Northwest Airlines to see the plane up close. If you buy that, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you. The trip to Minnesota makes sense. Airbus has struggled to sell the A380, and as pointed out in the San Diego Union Tribune, Northwest seems like the perfect candidate for the A380, as they (and United) fly more flights to Asia than any other US carrier.
For the time being, Northwest is set on the Boeing 787 for it’s long-haul needs, but airlines have changed their minds in the past. Airbus hopes that this non-sales call will do the trick. If not, it is just another in a line of struggles Airbus has faced convincing the market that it needs the A380.
