United Airlines Begin Matching Delta $20 Roundtrip Increase

Filed under: Airfares, Airlines, Airfare Increases — Rick Seaney @ 8:29 am

Last night in the 8:00pm EST U.S. domestic airfare distribution the FareCompare.com proprietary airfare processing system noted significant increase matching activity by United Airlines.

United Airlines began a fairly significant match of the $20 roundtrip increase initiated by Delta Air Lines late Monday evening — $20 roundtrip increases from United are noted in over 12,000 city pairs (just less than 2/3 of a full match) for both leisure (14 or more days advance purchase) and business airfares:

In a similar fashion as the American Airlines matching yesterday the bulk of the matching activity is targeted at their least competitive and smaller city routes. A quick check of United’s Denver (DEN) hub shows very few of their highly competitive routes with matching increases.

Half of the six (6) legacy airlines have yet to show any significant matching activity related to the Delta increase (Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines and US Airways).

It is unusual for an increase to be initiated early in the week (Monday) - this allows other airlines more time to contemplate and react before the slower weekend airfare filings - I would expect these three (3) remaining airlines to being matching to some degree in the next few days.
