United Airlines Increases Fuel Surcharge by $5 One-Way

Filed under: Airfare Increases, Airlines, United — Rick Seaney @ 11:54 am

In yesterday evenings 8:00pm EST domestic airfare distribution the FareCompare.com proprietary airfare processing system noted significant airfare increase activity by United Airlines.

Last night, amidst a wave of airfare sales for travel in early 2008 and a variety of expiring holiday airfare sales, United Airlines increased airfares on the majority of their domestic route system by adding an additional $5 one-way to its airfare fuel surcharge.

The previous fuel surcharge was 5$ one-way (with tax) and is now $10 one-way, effectively raising roundtrip airline tickets $10 on both leisure and business travelers.

This increase marks the eleventh (11th) attempted airfare increase since Labor Day weekend in 2007- to this point eight (8) of the previous ten (10) increase attempts had been matched widely with the most recent increase attempt by Delta Air Lines failing in early December.

It is unusual for an increase attempt of this magnitude to occur this late in the year, it will be interesting to see the reaction by the other legacy airlines in what is typically a very slow time period.
