This Hurts - Oil Hits $100 a Barrel

Filed under: Airfare Increases, Fuel Surcharges, News — Rick Seaney @ 12:59 am

Not good. Higher oil prices. That means higher jet fuel prices.

And that means, more packed planes as airlines continue to fill as many seats as possible.

And it also means, higher ticket prices. And more (see my 2008 predictions).

This year, more than ever, it will pay to shop early, and, use every technological tool at your disposal when planning a trip. One of the simplest is FareCompare’s Email Alerts.

Meanwhile, keep reading to see my charts on oil prices; there are some surprises…

The following chart shows the cost of a gallon of jet fuel for the past 8 years (data provided by the Department of Energy). Fuel is one of the biggest expenses — if not the most — for operating an airline. This soaring increase would make anyone a bit skittish on their monthly budget. Luckily prices for airline tickets haven’t jumped 6 fold, but you can rest assured this does not bode well for cheap prices in 2008.
