You’re all set for your trip: everything’s packed properly, there are no bottles bigger than 3-oz on your person, you’ve got your boarding pass and ID out, and… “Not so fast, sir!” That’s when you learn, you’re on the fabled “No Fly List”. Whether you’re on it or not, keep reading; there are surprises ahead. |
MYTH #1 - If you are famous, you’ll never land on the No Fly list.
- TRUTH: Tell that to Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.); he’ll set you straight.
MYTH #2 - Only a handful of people make the No Fly list
- TRUTH: the Dept. of Homeland Security’s Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP) has received more than 23,000 requests to get off the list
MYTH #3 - Go to DHS TRIP to get off the list; your name will be removed promptly
- TRUTH: You’re looking at 40-days to get your name “cleared”; and you still have problems at security checkpoints
MYTH #4 - Children are never put on the No Fly list
- TRUTH: 8-year old Brian Moore knows better. So do lots of other kids.
MYTH #5 - There’s no place to vent about this
- TRUTH: There is now! Go to the new TSA blog, and fire away
TIP: What to do? The “Middle Seat” column in the Wall St. Journal suggests you use your middle-name when making airfare reservations. We suggest you have some ID on you that includes your middle-name.
