Boomers: Love to Travel, but No Stereotypes, Please!

February 25, 2008 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News,Destinations

Remember the song, “Leaving on a Jet Plane”? It was a hit for Peter, Paul and Mary when it was released in 1969, and it’s a perfect anthem for the so-called Baby Boomers.

Why? Because boomers love to travel.

And that’s one of the few characteristics you can ascribe to this group of unique and adventuresome individuals (a group that includes Brad Pitt, Jimmy Buffett, Courteney Cox and Madonna).

If you’re a boomer (born 1946 through 1964), I need your help: tell me where you love to travel to (and please keep reading for details).

There are about 78-million people who could be classified as “Baby Boomers” (though I like the term, the “biggest generation” because it’s such a huge group); but analysts say, they defy classification.

Except for…travel.

Here’s some interesting nuggets I picked up from a travel marketing website:

  • Boomers see travel as a necessity
  • They like adventure
  • They like their independence (no stifling tours for them)
  • They like cheap airfare sales (that’s from my own experience)

Boomers are youthful, fit, and as I said, have a taste for adventure, but they also like their luxuries. Although many are stressed for time, they find the time for travel and make the most of it.

And I think that’s something we should all emulate.

My question to you : what’s your favorite destination? And where do you want to go next? Please leave a comment here; you’ll help me get you the information you want!

  5. How about Pittsburgh to Phoenix. I make that trip a lot because of my children there. Go figure I should be there!!I know I am not the only one that does that trip frequently…so lets see what you can do for us.

My son and I want to go to Shanghai in Aug. I don’t see a lot of published fars for the Olympics. I am surprised b/c I would think the Chinese gov. would want people over there
Let me know what you see out in the world of airfares!

  7. Vicki says:

Born in 1952. Went to Woodstock. My favorite vacation is going to an upscale spa all by myself! Family vacations are usually spent at a beautiful beach resort like La Samanna in St. Maarten.

  8. Sharon says:

love to visit my children: my son, in the US Army at Fort Rucker AL, my daughter in Albequerque, NM and my son in Tacoma WA. I would love to go to Germany and see my birthplace when my father was in the US Army.

  9. Marolyn Remillard says:

How about Iceland? I’ve heard that one should/must take a tour- traveling on one’s own may lead to the vehicle getting stuck. It seems expensive- any ideas?

  10. Deb Taylor says:

Relocated from Miami, Florida to Missoula, Montana and have family in Miami, Minneapolis, Seattle and San Francisco. Looking for rates for family to fly back for visits (Miami), family and friends to visit us. After living in a main hub for 20+ years it is hard to find reasonable flight rates. Your help is greatly need due to the new fixed income we are on. Thanks Deb

  11. Born in 1948, I have been traveling with family to Destin, Florida for 50 plus years. Beautiful. I would like to go to Las Vegas in near future.

  12. Kathy Simpson says:

Born in 1949, Love cruising anywhere, especially warm climates. Love Paris. Train travel in Europe is a blast. Our dollar needs to improve, get killed with the exchange. Like Jet Blue, hate overcrowded planes and cramped seats. Dislikes long plane trips, like to break it up. Have passport, will travel!

You are giving me deals from Ottawa but I am resident in Toronto. Would you kindly change that.

  14. mr.mango says:

Brazil! But airfares seem about 20 – 30% higher this year (looking at the summer). Is it fuel, weak dollar, demand? Does the 4-month rule work for international fares?

After Brazil, looking at Portugal, Italy, Argentina

  15. Margie Sorley says:

With children out of the nest and some retirmement income
my husband and I would like to take off for a year and travel-living for a while in places we are enjoying by renting small furnished accomodations. Two years ago we spent 30 days in Europe on a rush trip with tours. Last year we spent 2 weeks in Norway-with tours. We now would like to be more leisurely, willing to stay in less touristy places, avoiding high tourist season and would like our dog to accompany us. Not limited to Europe- have not seen Asia, South America, Austalia/New Zealand. Have seen some of Mexico, Bahamas and Canada. How to plan a trip like that and expected costs are questions we are trying to answer.

  16. Mitzi Soward says:

Leaving On A Jet Plane came out the year I graduated from high school but it was several years later before I got on a plane. Always loved to travel – anywhere (even though it’s usually by car). One of my favorite destinations is the front porch of the Cone Manor just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, NC – great place to daydream in the mountains of Western NC. Always wanted to go to Italy/Ireland/Scotland…………maybe someday before I’m too old.

  17. Rachel says:

Are there any special hotel and airfare packages to Israel?

  18. keith taylor says:

London, with a quick dash thru the chunnel to Paris, would be a romantic destination and a quick trip for a short week what are the great deals to visit the queens hometown?

  19. Sally Webster says:

Umm, at the risk of being lynched for writing about this, I just want to say that I’m glad I managed to fly to Sri Lanka, the Maldives, to and from St Lucia, Barbados, around Europe, Canada, USA, before now. With the soaring pollution and cost of fuel (in that order of importance)my backpack can gather dust under the bed for all I care.I’d rather know that places will still exist for future populations, animal and human, because of efforts made, than to die guilty of having satisified an only understandable curiosity of how others live and lived.

  20. Lala says:

I have retired to West Africa. Jacques and I are well-travelled. We would like to find competitive fares from Dakar to the following destinations on our list: Martinique, Kenya, Singapore, Italy, Cuba. C’est possible?

  21. marlene voelker says:

    Hi,

would like a round trip between Phoenix Arizona and Calgary Canada sometime in July, preferably July 15 to 29 but am very flexible.

    thanks, Marlene

  22. Steve Rose says:

My favorite places to travel to and relax: (1) Roxanne Kremer’s Dolphin Corners Lodge, on the Yrapa River, deep in the Amazon jungle, Peru. only way to get there is by boat, no roads, no electricity. (2) The Florida Keys really laid back; (3) Havasupai Indian Reservation, Supai, Arizona, warm magical natural travertine pools/falls, only US town with a post office where mail delivery is only by mule. Only 4 ways in and out: horse, mule, foot or helicopter.

Next place wish to travel to to relax: Embera Native Tribal villages in the Panama Jungle. Looking for round trip between Phoenix and Panama City.
