Saw this on the always informative Gadling website: It seems the long awaited “new” Chicago airport is moving forward a bit (about time; it was officially decided that the Chicago area needed a new airport 20-years ago). The name (at least, so far): South Surburban Airport (I know, doesn’t exactly rock my world, either). Good news: this could really ease things at O’Hare. Bad news: well, I have a couple of interesting nuggets of info, if you keep reading… |
One thing that’s not so good: nobody seems to have any idea when this airport will become a reality. If you go to the Master Plan page for the would-be airport, the “Project Implementation” section is “under construction”. And none of the FAQ’s gives a hint on when we’ll see this, either.
One of the questions I’d like to ask is about the runway; according to that Master Plan, the primary runway will be 9,500 feet long. According to Wikipedia, that’s long enough for a plane as big as the new Airbus A380; but the article also points out that some international flights request a length of 10,000 feet.
I’m sure this will be straightened out by opening day. Whenever that will be.
