Ominous: Delta Pulls Flights. Will Others Follow?

Filed under: Airfare Increases, Airlines, Delta — Rick Seaney @ 5:37 pm

Saw an interesting roundup of airline/fuel-related stories in USA Today; what really caught my eye was their use of the word “ominous” in the headline.

Various publications were quoted about airline CEO’s statements or hints of coming changes to deal with the situation, a situation I’ve been closely following right here in this very blog.

Some are suggesting pulling out of unprofitable markets; Delta has already done it. Click “more” for the details.

Last week, Delta announced it was pulling out of 4-markets: Islip, NY; Bellingham, WA; Fargo, ND and Atlantic City, NJ.

The rationale was simple: the airline wasn’t making enough money.

Now the CEO’s of Northwest and Continental have been quoting as saying this might be the time to “rethink” the “size” of their airlines. One thing we do know: those already packed planes most likely get MORE cramped, if such a thing is possible.

As I said, I have and will continue to follow this story closely.
