Delta Dashed Two Weeks in a Row – No Takers on $10 Roundtrip Increase, Rolls Back

March 31, 2008 | Posted in: Airfare News

For the first time this year a legacy airline got absolutely no takers on an attempted airfare hike.

Delta Air Lines rolled back their attempted airfare fuel surcharge increase of an additional $10 roundtrip (route system wide) – initiated Thursday — as no legacy airline budged to match them over the weekend.

The average domestic U.S. fuel surcharge continues to remain at $50 roundtrip…

Typically the heaviest air travel shopping days of the week are Monday and Tuesday and Delta had no choice but to rollback the increase to stay competitive.

After two increase failures in consecutive weeks it looks like the legacy airlines may possibly take a breather for a few weeks on airfare hikes — as Delta’s increase failure last week had only briefly matched by United Airlines leaving the other four legacy airlines on the sidelines.

Legacy airlines have been on a break neck pace in 2008 of what would be 40 airfare hikes this year with this latest failed hike being the 10th increase attempt of the first quarter of this year – six of which have previously been successful.

The 2008 airfare hike timeline breaks down as follows:

  • January 3rd, initiated by United, $10 roundtrip, successful (sticky)
  • January 11th, initiated by United, $30 roundtrip, unsuccessful
  • January 17th, initiated by American, $20 roundtrip, unsuccessful
  • January 24th, initiated by Continental, $20 roundtrip, successful (sticky)
  • February 22nd, initiated by United, $10 roundtrip, successful (sticky)
  • February 28th, initiated by Delta, $10 roundtrip, successful (sticky)
  • March 7th, initiated by United, $10 roundtrip, successful (sticky)
  • March 14th, initiated by United, $4-$50 roundtrip, successful (sticky)
  • March 19th, initiated by Delta, $10 roundtrip, unsuccessful
  • March 27th, initiated by Delta $10 roundtrip, unsuccessful
