Update on Easing Airport Congestion: Who’s Going to Pay?

Filed under: Airlines, Airport, Delays — Rick Seaney @ 3:05 pm

The Air Transport Association really doesn’t like the Department of Transportation’s idea to allow airports to charge bigger bucks for landing fees at the most popular travel times.

And, the ATA (a trade group which represents all the major carriers) may sue.

Well, something has to be done.

The situation can’t continue (think JFK and Newark). Keep reading for more details.

In an article in Business Week, and ATA spokesperson is quoted as say, “We will pursue all of our options.”

Sounds ominous. What’s got them so worked up? The proposed fees, which are meant to prod airlines into spreading their flights out, all throughout the day (instead of piling up at peak times). more evenly through the day and get congested airports to include in landing fees the cost of expansion projects.

If you ask the ATA, they say this will just increase the costs for the industry and the passengers. Hmmm. I suspect most of the cost would land on us passengers. Anyway, the ATA would like to see flight-path changes (and other improvements) instead.

But, as I said, something needs to be done.
