Continental Airlines Raises Transatlantic Fuel Surcharge by $40 Roundtrip now $270 Roundtrip

May 1, 2008 | Posted in: Airfare Increases, Continental, Fuel Surcharges

In the wee hours this morning Continental Airlines filed a change to their trans-Atlantic international fuel surcharge – raising it by $40 roundtrip to $270 roundtrip.

Typical taxes and fees on a European roundtrip are approximately $120, which means that before you even start to pay for airfare on any European trip (including those off-season winter prices) you are going to be looking at just shy of $400 before the the airlines (in this case Continental) even starts to charge for airfare. For summer international travel — prices will be well above $1200 out-the-door for roundtrips to Europe .. Ouch!

Good thing that the surcharges apply to new tickets… I bought my six tickets in previous months :)

Do airlines have to raise their prices to match price hikes? It seems like if one airline chose not to raise its prices they would make money because everyone would flock to that airline.

Any insider information about upcoming summer airfare sales? I’m still holding out to purchase my end of July travel tickets to California. Prices right now are still more than $150 higher per ticket than they were last year.

Our group reserved tickets for an international flight months ago. When we went to pay the balance today, we were told that there would be an additional $200 per person fuel surcharge (on an already extravegantly expensive $1600.00 pp ticket) Is it legal to add this charge months after reserving and paying our deposit?

#1- where did you find info that surcharges apply only to new tix? I am trying to fight Continental’s current $200 pp fuel surcharge on tix reserved months ago.
