Rumors of a Southwest Match of Bag Fee is BUNK (for now)

Filed under: Airline Fees, Southwest — Rick Seaney @ 3:31 pm

Not sure where these things originate, but I did see this line in a New York Times article: “Other major American airlines, including Southwest Airlines, said Wednesday that they were considering matching the fee.”

I found this a little ambiguous, so I emailed Southwest’s Linda Rutherford, who is the airline’s Vice President, Public Relations and Community Affairs, and this is what she had to say:

“Rick: punitive fees don’t fly with us, so what you heard are just rumors. We are NOT thinking of gouging our Customers with such a fee to check a bag.” — Southwest’s Linda Rutherford

    There you have it.

    1. Interesting Rick, when I saw the piece last night, I didn’t see that. But when I clicked the link to the article, here is what it said

“Other major American airlines, said Wednesday that they were studying whether to match the fee, but Southwest Airlines said today that it did not plan to do so.”

    2. Hi Elliot, Southwest Airlines requested that the NY Times change the article online (they obliged — thus the current “corrected” statement), and print a retraction in the Friday paper (so you can checkout the retraction tomorrow in the print version)
