The announcement today by United Airlines of cuts in capacity should have passengers wondering what aircraft (if any) they will be flying in the coming year. We decided to pull in-depth information on which airports and routes are affected by these cuts. It is important to note that retiring these aircraft doesn’t imply that the cities and routes listed will lose service - rather the question is what will replace these outgoing aircraft. Options include less flights, moving current aircraft from other routes or bringing in smaller aircraft (possibly via regional airline partners). |
A few notes:
- United’s current fleet of 400 aircraft has only 95 Airbus 319/320’s (United & Ted) which are of similar size to these retiring 737’s (source: airfleets.net)
- Retiring 94 Boeing 737 model 300,500 (all in their fleet)
- Newest Boeing 737 in their fleet manufactured in 1992 (source: airfleets.com)
- Oldest Boeing 737 in their fleet manufactured in 1986 (source: airfleets.com)
- Retiring 6 Boeing 747
- Estimated sale price of these aircraft: 720 million (source: Credit Suisse)
- As might be expected United’s hub cities have the most departures for these retiring aircraft
With fuel prices at unprecedented levels, U.S. currency upside down and a stumbling economy — it appears that cheap airline tickets and a broad choice of flight times/destinations will make a comeback - at the same time as SUV’s.
The following tables show the number of daily United departures on a typical Monday in September 2008 on the retiring Boeing 737 and 747 aircraft:
