Saw this video report on CNN: it seems Skywest somehow lost track of a youngster under their supervision who was flying alone from Yuma, AZ to Salt Lake City and beyond; the boy was left alone in the Salt Lake airport to find his next connection. His parents, of course, had paid the obligatory $100 charge so this wouldn’t happen. I’m not dumping on Skywest particularly; these snafus are rare and seem to occur with a number of airlines. The point is, should this be occurring at all? |

Of course this shouldn’t be occuring at all, but I still think we should reserve complete judgement until we hear the other side of the story. We don’t really know what happened. Suppose that the kid involved was told to stay in his seat until the other passengers left the aircraft so they could properly accompany him off, but instead he just got up and left the plane. I’m not saying that happened, but, it is certainly possible.
I remember when I was about 12, I flew the old, non-existant any longer Canadian Airlines (CP) from somewhere in Florida to YYZ. Upon debarding, myself, and another unaccompanied minor were escorted by an employee who was also handling somewhone in a wheelchair. When we got to the point where we had to go downstairs to clear customs, the agent basically told us to go down the escalator and wait at the bottom while he took the person in the wheelchair down the elevator (why they didn’t take us in the elevator too, I’ll never know). We got to the bottom, and waited and waited and waited, but she never came back, At 12 years old, there I was having to clear customs on my own (and looking back, its surprising the customs agent just let us through without any questions about why a 12 year old is going through customs at an airport alone. My parents were not impressed with CP.
However, at least for the family, their kid ended up safe and sound. I’m surprised to hear of this story coming from SkyWest, where I have always found them to have excellent service and employees that on a whole, are extremely friendly. I’m also glad that the family at least got the unaccompanied minor charge back, which I’m sure many airlines (AA, anyone) wouldn’t give back.
