ONE MORE TIME: American Adds $20 Fuel Surcharge

June 11, 2008 | Posted in: Airfare News,Fuel Surcharges

UPDATE: UNITED AND CONTINENTAL MATCH THIS HIKE

This morning, American added a $20 fuel surcharge in about half their airfare markets.

Delta, meanwhile, in an action termed “coincidental” followed a little later with a $20 price hike affecting just a couple of hundred markets (and not the broad, system-wide hike initated by American).

If the situation were to proceed “normally” I would expect Continental and United to match this increase tonight at 8pm, with US Airways and Northwest matching tomorrow morning.

But things aren’t exactly “normal” these days — a 3rd successive price-hike failure within a week would obviously indicate something has changed in the marketplace (especially given the success of all fare increases since the end of March).

Again, something “of note” may be happening — or changing — and we’re looking into it.
