Okay, the 21st attempted airfare hike of the year, is an “attempt” no more — it is now a bona fide hike of $20 to $40 roundtrip (mostly $20) across the bulk of the legacy carriers’ route systems. The hike began July 2, and was initiated by United. And this15th “successful” airfare hike of the year is now firmly in place. I expect pricing to be very volatile in the next few weeks as airlines attempt to keep planes full for the last wave of summer air travel before kids head back to school. In the past few years we have seen quite a few airfare sales for early fall travel as traffic wanes after the summer bustle –but — it is unclear at this point whether we will see wide spread sales this year as flight cutbacks coupled with the cost of fuel will likely blunt any need or desire to discount. |
