Midwest Airlines Eliminates Routes, Expands Codeshare Agreements

Filed under: Midwest — Rick Seaney @ 12:04 pm

Midwest Airlines has announced its new flight schedule to commence on September 8th, 2008. The new schedule is seen as a result of the carrier’s attempts to restructure in the face of rising fuel costs.

The announcement includes several changes to the Midwest Airlines’ route system, codeshare agreements, seasonal travel, and more.

Keep reading for a brief overview of how these changes from Midwest Airlines could affect your travel plans for this fall and beyond…

Service to 32 Cities

  • Midwest Airlines’ new schedule retains service to 32 cities, including destinations in the Midwest as well as on both coasts.

Increased Codesharing with Northwest Airlines

  • We’ll see an addition of 100+ city-pairs covered by the codesharing agreement between Midwest Airlines and Northwest Airlines.

Service Changes to Florida and California

  • Ft. Lauderdale, Ft, Meyers, and San Diego have been eliminated from Midwest’s route system. However, the carrier will now offer one-stop (no deplaning) service to Los Angeles and Seattle/Tacoma from Kansas City.
  • Flights to Orlando will only take place during “peak” travel months. This season, Orlando travel is available from Oct. 21st, 2008 to April 30th, 2009.

Reduction in Regional Service

  • Midwest Airlines is eliminating a number of short-hop routes handled by its Midwest Connect regional jet service. Here are the airports that will no longer enjoy service:
  • Baltimore; Hartford, Conn.; Louisville, Ky.; Muskegon, Mich.; Raleigh/Durham, N.C.; St. Louis; San Antonio; and Wausau/Stevens Point, Wis. Additionally, it will discontinue its nonstop Kansas City-Madison, Wis. route, but will continue to offer the service via Milwaukee. (from Yahoo! Finance)

Midwest Airlines has already announced that it will ground its MD-80 fleet, and this restructuring will help facilitate that move and perhaps help the airline deal with increasing costs.

  1. I am one of those passengers who booked last May to go from CWA (Wausau/Stevens Point) to Orlando. No one contacted me–I heard about it on the news and checked my online reservation. Now they have me driving 3 1/2 hours to Milwaukee as the originator departure hub is now shut down. For claims of excellent ‘customer service’ bragging rights, you’d think they’d have the common courtesy to contact its customers and provide some alternatives with partner airlines. I’m heading out on a cruise and need specific flights in order to make my cruise departure.

  2. I am another passenger with a family of 7 flying to MCO from MKE. We had booked a round trip. We now only have a one-way ticket. I have attempted to have a few different options from Midwest, as of now, they are offering my money back; even though I have a few flight pattern options they fly or they codeshare. It is a shame they won’t list how seats were given for their reduced frequency to and from MCO from MKE. The web page does not say a thing about the frequency of flights being changed. A few reps are very nice on the phones, others just don’t seem to care. Best of luck to those flying with Midwest.
