I am sure a lot of you saw this coming. Barring a last minute miracle, the Italian airline is facing collapse. A last minute offer to buy Alitalia by a consortium of Italian industrialists was withdrawn. If you had tickets on the bankrupt carrier, contact your credit card company — and don’t delay. |

Now don’t panic. They’re not going to pull a skybus. My family and I flew with them in June. My parents flew a leg with them last month as part of a longer trip with CO. My father returns next week with the 1st leg on AZ. How would calling the credit card help me? A new ticket or half of it would cost significantly more. I’m willing to take the risk.

The fact that you flew with them 3 months ago is irrelevant to the current financial problem. They have already started to cancel flights. Now would be a good time to panic if you have tickets for a future trip.
The credit card companies will help you file a dispute and get reimbursement if your flight is canceled.

I booked my flight months ago,and now I am left holding a ticket which may be worthless. To be safe,I must make back-up reservations on trains or planes. The cost of all of this soon starts rising exponentially.
If I ask about canceling my Alitallia flight,I am threatened with penalties which may exceed the price of the ticket itself.
What rights do customers have in such a predicament?

Italians seem to be used to such brinkmanship. Now unions agreed to a plan, the new company will merge Alitalia with AirOne and the minority partner (and alliance) will more likely be Lufthansa rather than AirFranceKLM. A lot is undecided though but tickets are valid…
