Ever think you’d see “bargain” and “business class” in the same sentence? Read my latest column on ABCNews.com, and — you will. Or keep reading for the basics: Business class airfare to Europe is a quirky new bargain – one of the after-effects of the recession. I should know: I got in last night from London with my family — and I paid $1,360 (plus tax) for each of our tickets. And when I looked yesterday, I saw prices for transatlantic flights for as low as $750+ each way. What’s going on? A lot of it has to do with…the “memo”. Didn’t get your copy yet? Essentially it says, “Attn Road Warriors:? From Now On, We All Fly Coach!” And trust me, it’s happening — there are a lot of empty seats up front, and the airlines want to fill them. Ergo, bargain time. Worried about spending this kind of money during a major economic meltdown? Well, I’d never counsel anyone to go into debt, but — if you have the money, and you’ve been thinking about that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe, this could be your opportunity. Or maybe this could be THE Christmas (or Hanukah or New Year’s) gift for the family. And who knows? Spending a little now might just help keep your favorite airline afloat in the challenging times to come… |
