Virgin America Gives Up on O’Hare

December 5, 2008 | Posted in: Airport, Virgin America

Virgin America will not be flying to Chicago — not anytime soon, anyway. The airline couldn’t strike a deal with either American, Delta or United to gain a couple of gates at the airport (those airlines have long-term leases for the gates, through 2018, and they’re hanging on to them).

Too bad, especially since Chicago needs the traffic — there’s been a 23% drop in the airport capacity over the past several years — with most of it occurring just this fall. And yes, American, Delta and United have all reduced flights in and out of O’Hare.

Chicago’s loss — but maybe a gain for Boston, Atlanta or Miami — we shall see.
