Remember Grumpy Santa? Southwest Sure Does (Must-See Video)

December 22, 2008 | Posted in: Holiday Travel,Southwest,Travel Tips | 0 comments

Those of you FareCompare fans who were around last year will no doubt remember “Grumpy Santa” – a member of my staff who hoped to break a record by visiting the 48-contiguous states in 12 days.

Well, Grumpy didn’t break the record — but he did have some uh, interesting adventures — he endured bumpy rides, inhaled delicious cookies, and was serenaded by a stellar stew (okay, a fascinating flight attendant, if you prefer).

Now — he’s baaaaaack!

Southwest Airlines has resurrected video — showing Santa getting stuffed and learning the art of peanut passing. See it now on the Southwest blog.

Regarding the “stuffed” part of the video: Santa (assisted by a Southwest employee) gets padded with numerous airline pillows. Which got me to thinking: had this been on a jetBlue flight — where you pay for pillows — imagine the bill I would have been stuck with!

Oh, How Those Bag Fees Add Up

December 22, 2008 | Posted in: Airline News,Southwest,US Airways | 1 comment

Terry Maxon’s Airline Biz blog has an interesting breakdown of airline fees for checked baggage — and as he points out, “it’s easy to see why [they] speak so highly of the fees” — no kidding!

For American Airlines, those bag fees add up to an average of $2.30 per passenger; in second place is US Airways which collects an average of $2.22 per flier (but maybe they make that up with their $2 Cokes).

Southwest is low man on this chart — they collect an average of only $.25 per passenger, but then, they don’t charge for a first or second bag. But you have to wonder, given the money showering down on the other airlines — for how long?

You can see what all the airlines charge, for bags and more, on my Domestic Airline Fee Chart.

Stuck in the Airport — and Worse

December 22, 2008 | Posted in: Airline News,Delays,Northwest | 1 comment

There were more than a few horror stories from the weekend — with its terrible winter weather — most notably the saga of that Continental jet that slid off a runway in Denver. No one was killed — which one firefighter on the scene characterized as “a miracle” — but many were hospitalized.

At other airports, it was a waiting game. One of my staffers was supposed to pick up her teen at LAX at 7pm Saturday — the kid was coming in from her college in the Midwest — unfortunately that Northwest arrival was delayed and delayed, until 4:30am Sunday.

It could have been worse. Some passengers departing from the Seattle-Tacoma airport on Saturday were told they wouldn’t be leaving until today — or later.

Part of the problem, of course, was the terrible weather — but part of it was the lack of de-icing fluid — which I blogged about earlier this month. Scary stuff.

NEW: Frontier Offers 3-Levels of Pricing

December 22, 2008 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News,Pricing Activity | 0 comments

Frontier Airlines is offering a brand new way of buying airfare — they call it “AirFairs” — which seems to be simply another way of saying, “if you spend more, you’ll get more”. Nevertheless, it seems to offer a bit more transparency regarding passenger amenities, and ala carte pricing.

From now on, when you buy a ticket with Frontier, you must select one of three fare levels:

  • Classic Plus — ticket is fully refundable, with no fee for changing it, plus customers get priority boarding, two free checked-bags, complimentary DIRECTV, free snack, and enhanced miles earnings
  • Classic – all of the above, except the ticket is not fully refundable — there is a $50 fee for itinerary changes, a $75 fee for same-day changes, and lesser miles earnings
  • Economy — you get the cheapest seat, with none of the above frills

According to the press release, the mid-range choice, Classic, is only about $20 more than economy so I suspect that will be pretty popular.

Storm Travel Tips: What to do if Your Flight is Delayed/Cancelled

December 19, 2008 | Posted in: Airline News,Delays,Holiday Travel,Storms,Weather | 1 comment

It’s getting really bad out there, but we do have a couple of “survival tips” to help in case your flight is cancelled or delayed.

GOOD NEWS: Many airlines are offering customers the option of rescheduling their flights over the next few days — flights that go through storm-affected airports — without paying a fee (and some may offer you a refund). That may sound like a no-brainer, but it could save you a good chunk of change.

BAD NEWS: Flights are full, so finding an available seat to switch to, will be tricky.

WHAT TO DO: Contact your airline immediately.

  • If you’re already at the airport head for a gate agent — for some reason they can often be more accommodating than the reps at the ticket counters, but head there if you can’t reach anyone at the gate.
  • If you have to wait in line at all, get on your phone and call the airline while you wait. It will be first-come, first-served so make sure you’re among those served.
  • If a storm makes you late to the airport, and you miss your flight, some airlines (like Alaska) will offer stand-by at no extra charge — but if you know you’re going to be late, call ahead and ask to be put on the stand-by list. The sooner you get on it, the better your chances.
  • If you know you’ll be late for your connection, work out an alternative with the gate agent before you fly there. If there’s not enough time for that, again — call the airline.

BOTTOM LINE: Make contact with your airline or airlines as soon as humanly possible.

Storm Delays, Cancellations – If Flying Today, Contact Your Airline

December 19, 2008 | Posted in: Delays,Storms,Weather | 0 comments

I am just hearing on CNN that heavy snow is shutting down Milwaukee‘s airport, and we know much of the Midwest has taken a beating.

Now, it’s the Northeast’s turn. Watch for delays and cancellations.

If you’re traveling today, no matter where you’re heading — check with your airline. Remember — Las Vegas doesn’t normally get snow, right? Yet it did — with a vengeance.

And even if your city isn’t hit with bad weather, do not assume your airport will be problem-free.

Delayed flights from storm areas can delay flights elsewhere — we’ve already seen that in Tampa this week.

Get Ready for SUMMER Deals — Roundtrip to London for $672 TOTAL

December 18, 2008 | Posted in: Airfare News,Europe | 1 comment

Incredible: I just found a roundtrip airfare, from Newark to Heathrow on Air India — in July, the PEAK of the summer season — for just $672.

That’s $672 out-the-door — this price includes the taxes, fees and surcharges!

See for yourself:

I think we are going to see more deals to Europe this summer at under $1,000 a ticket — so if you’ve been dying to go, head to the FareCompare homepage and sign up for our email alerts now.

Don’t miss a single deal — or, in the case of this $672 roundtrip airfare — perhaps I should say, steal.

The “It” List: Must-See Destinations of 2009

December 18, 2008 | Posted in: Destinations,List | 1 comment

Concierge.com has come out with its brand new list of must-see destinations for the new year, or as they put it,emerging places that will be on everybody’s lips two years from now” (and thanks, gadling.com, for bringing this to our attention).

Some of these cities/regions may spark some debate — the list includes Toronto and Utah (the article’s take on Utah: “Hungry for adventure in your own backyard?”)

But judge for yourself. Here’s the list:

  1. Tel Aviv, Israel
  2. Bolivia
  3. Utah
  4. Acapulco, Mexico
  5. Vilnius, Lithuania
  6. Central Philippines
  7. New York City
  8. Rajasthan, India
  9. Toronto, Canada
  10. Beirut, Lebanon

I thought it would be fun to go back and look up 2007′s list — remember, these “It” destinations are places that “will be on everybody’s lips two years from now” — so here’s some of the highlights from 2007.

  • Itacare, Brazil
  • Ljubljana, Slovenia
  • Macao, China
  • Gabon
  • Istanbul, Turkey
