Bad News: Fewer Fliers. Good News: Cheaper Flights – for Now.

February 4, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News

The aviation consulting firm, the Boyd Group has a prediction: U.S. airlines will carry about 41-million fewer passengers this year.

That’s going to hurt the airlines, according to the Star-Telegram – it could mean they’ll take in $25 billion less through the year 2011.

Meanwhile, the airlines are offering deep discounts in the face of weakening bookings – and if you don’t believe that, just check out our Deals blog or just book a flight on FareCompare – the airlines are dealing.

The Boyd Group’s biggest fear? What it calls the “airline neutron bomb” – a sharp decline in business and first-class passengers on international flights. How to prevent this? Good question.

Here’s a step in the right direction, perhaps: if more execs wean their companies away from private jets (as many have said they plan to), I think they’ll be surprised at the luxury available in today’s first class (and business class, too). Plus, they’ll save some real money.
