Q. Why Do Airlines Lose Fewer Bags? A. There are Fewer Bags to Lose!

Yes, the airlines are not losing as many bags as they used to – make that, 1.3 million fewer in 2008 compared to 2007.

And WE are the reason: fewer passengers + fewer bags.

The passenger part comes into play with airline capacity cuts. The bag part has to do with the airline fees – some of us don’t want to pay them, so we haul our bags onboard, rendering them “lost-proof”.

Losing fewer bags probably has more to do with fewer passengers than anything else, and that’s because most of us have “accepted” the bag fees – however grudgingly. Airline execs do, however, see a decline in second checked-bags – and not surprisingly, since most airlines will charge passengers $50 roundtrip for those.
