Passenger of the Year: Man-in-a-Hurry Jumps from Plane

March 4, 2009 | Posted in: Airplanes, American, Passengers, Travel Safety

Here’s a weird one.

An unidentified man – clearly in a hurry – was the first passenger to deplane American Airlines flight 1343 yesterday. First is right: he jumped off the jet while it was still on the tarmac in Dallas, waiting to complete its taxi to the gate.

How’d he do it? The fellow ran through coach and first class, then opened the right-side galley door, which triggered the emergency slide – then he jumped off, slid down, and was on his way.

Unfortunately, Our-Man-in-a-Hurry was then detained by American personnel – and the cops. We have no idea why he was in such a hurry or where he was going, but we do know he ended up having a psych evaluation.

By the way, I checked out his Charlotte-to-Dallas flight times – and his plane landed almost right on-time (it was actually “officially” 3 minutes late, but I suspect the slide-jumping had a little something to do with that). So he really created his own “delay”.

I guess it’s true what they say: haste makes waste.

I hope AA invoices the pax for any costs associated with this, including any costs necessary to replace/repack the slide and any delay compensation due to the plane’s delayed schedule and or time in the hanger for repairs.

It’s one thing to want to be off the plane first, but this idiot should have known that he can’t open the door to do that.

And just a question, where was the crew member in the front through all this. I would think if the plane wasn’t at the gate yet, there would be someone in the jumpseat at the front that should have been able to prevent this.
