Yes! Continental Breaks the $800 July Europe Barrier

March 29, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Europe

Historically, travel from the U.S. to Europe in July has been a minimum of $1,000 roundtrip – this, however, is anything but a typical year.

Continental — along with the other trans-Atlantic airlines — has been seriously discounting Spring travel to Europe and finally we are starting to see those prices creep into the peak summer months (some have already crept into June departures).

Bottom Line: If you are paying over $600 for travel to Europe before the end of May — you are paying too much — wait a few weeks for those cheaper prices to sneak into July.

For those travelers who have been waiting for that once-in-a-lifetime summer European trip — keep a close eye on things and sign up for our alerts on FareCompare.com as the prices are slowly coming down (averages for the first week in July on other airlines for non-stops are shown below, while Continental and American routes shown in the diagram):

  • Air France – $1,044
  • British Airways – $914
  • Delta – $957
  • Lufthansa – $997
  • Northwest – $1,084
  • United – $1,002
  • US Airways – $868

This is good news! We’re looking at flights from Kansas City to Paris June 13, returning June 27. Right now the prices are around $900 per (t&f included.) Should we buy now or does it make sense to wait? If it makes sense to wait, how long?

I have basically the same question. Are July flights (to Ireland specifically) get much better than this? It wouldn’t hurt to wait a little longer, would it?

  3. Rick Seaney says:

Sara, buy now, you should be able to get in July under $600 all in.

Jack, that is not a bad deal historically, I doubt it will get much higher, but could get lower, I might wait a week or two, but I won’t be upset if you buy at that price point (remember I am cheapskate and a gambler)

Thanks for the reply, Rick, and for the great site! I went ahead and pulled the trigger, so everyone who will take advantage of the inevitable price drop that occurs after I buy a flight – you’re welcome! :)

Hawaii has been one of my favorite tourist destination every summer – so fascinating and amazing!
