When the Godzilla of Planes (A380) is a Little Too Big

March 20, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News | 0 comments

Everyone touted the A380 because, not only was it huge (it can seat 800!) – it was relatively cheap to run. The world’s largest passenger plane is more fuel efficient than most aircraft – plus it was thought that, with slumping demand, routes could be dropped and/or consolidated and those passengers could fill up the Airbus.

Uh…except that “slumping demand” slumped a little too much – which means there’s plenty of room on the A380!

And that’s prompted the Emirates to sideline its A380′s on the Dubai to New York route – and switch to Boeing’s smaller 777 (it has about 150 fewer seats).

Emirates, meanwhile, has 54 – yep, 54 – of the big Airbus planes still on order, according to Bloomberg. It may delay taking possession of some of them.

Virgin America Adds New Bag Fee ($15 for first checked-bag)

March 20, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News | 0 comments

And another one bites the dust…

Yes, no more free checked-bags on Virgin America. Like most of the other U.S. carriers, Virgin will now charge $15 for a first piece of checked luggage.

You can’t blame them – the fee, though widely-disliked, has gained widespread acceptance (and makes the airlines a ton of money). Those who really hate it have switched to carryon bags, while others grumble – and pay the fee.

Two glimmers of good news – VA has reduced its fee for a second checked bag, from $25 to $15 – and reduced its fee for online ticket changes/ cancellations — from $75 to $50.

Just for Fun: Your Flying Car is Ready, Mr. Jetson

March 19, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Multimedia,Travel Tips | 0 comments

Remember the flying cars that were all over the Jetsons TV show?

When you consider the Jetsons debuted way back in 1962 – frankly, I thought we’d all be driving/flying these things ourselves by now.

Well now, there IS a flying car – from the Massachusetts-based Terrafugia company. Not sure how practical it is, though – it costs about $200,000 – plus, where are you going to take-off and land the thing? But – see for yourself…

NEW: Summer Sale from Southwest

March 19, 2009 | Posted in: Southwest | 0 comments

Alliteration just doesn’t get much better than “Summer Sale from Southwest” unless it’s, “Delightful Dollar Days”.

Either way, Southwest has a great new system-wide sale that’s good for most of the summer – through August 14. Look for prices from $49 to $99 each-way.

Book by April 6th.

You can get full details right here.

Business Class: A Useless Luxury? Or a Basic Human Right?

March 19, 2009 | Posted in: Europe | 2 comments

I was perusing some of the latest figures from the IATA* which represents more than 230 international airlines – and not surprisingly -business class travel is plunging.

Asian markets are seeing the biggest drop in this premium travel -flights across the Pacific were down 25% and transatlantic business class travel was also down 15%.

Like everyone else, corporations are trying to save money, trying to be responsible to their stock-holders and I applaud that, but – what about the people who have to take these flights? To frequent business fliers, a plane is really an extension of their workspace – a flying office.

Would you accept an office that featured a desk that jammed your knees? A cubicle in which it was impossible to move your elbows? A work environment in which you could never be if your laptop could be connected?

Again, I’m all for saving money – but for the international road warriors among us, I think I raise some valid questions. Thoughts?

TSA Steps Up Airport Gate Searches

March 18, 2009 | Posted in: Security | 4 comments

Getting through an airport security line may no longer mean you’re done with the security process. TSA has increased its security measures at airport gates, meaning more people may get pulled out out of line for an additional check just before they board the plane:

“Passengers can be selected at random or for suspicious behavior, according to a TSA memo dated last Thursday. The program primarily targets riskier flights, according to the memo, which doesn’t specify how flights are singled out. The TSA says it has done occasional checks of passengers at airport gates and that the new stepped-up effort has nothing to do with any particular threat.” (from USA Today)

TSA believes the approach makes it more difficult to monitor exactly how airport security works, saying the added measure “serves as a random, unpredictable layer.”

While the TSA is tasked with putting security first, it’s no surprise that some passengers perceive the measure as just another in a long list of “hassles” they’re forced to deal with when traveling.

What do you think? Is this a step in the right direction for the TSA?

Are Airlines Running Out of Fee Possibilities?

Well, the news organization Reuters thinks airlines have reached a limit on new fees, but I’m not so certain.

I’m sure enterprising airlines can find a few more items/services to squeeze fees from (paying to be first in line to deplane? At some airports, United’s Premier Line allows you to pay for first-to-board privileges — at $25 person). Plus, maybe more will do what Spirit is doing: making passengers pay for the privilege of buying tickets online (as opposed to at the airport counter).

And there’s always advertising on board. We’ve seen some ads, and may see more. Of course, Spirit’s flight attendants don’t like it when they were forced to become human billboards, but that’s another story.

ABCNews.com Column: Why Pay Retail?

March 18, 2009 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airline News | 1 comment

Here’s something you should know: this seemingly endless round of airfare sales will not last forever. It can’t.

But I believe this crazy environment will last a little longer. But for now, why pay retail? The airlines are tempting us with too many “wholesale” prices to do otherwise.

Eventually though, a couple of things will happen – one or the other, or in combination:

  • Airlines will cut capacity again (it’s coming)
  • More people will fly

The result: higher airfares. But if fliers balk at that – watch for more fees. After all, Spirit Airlines is now charging customers for the privilege of making reservations online – who’s next?
