American Airlines to Allow Miles Redemption – One-Way

May 11, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Ask Rick,Frequent Flyer

Did you ever think to yourself – darn, I’ve only got enough miles for half the flight I want to take?

American Airlines now says, no problem now!

The airline’s AAdvantage Plus mileage program is starting something new, called One Way Flex. In other words, you can use your miles for just one leg of your flight.

Check with American’s website for all the details. I suspect this is going to be enormously popular.

And I wonder how quickly some of the others will be following suit.

I discovered this by accident on Sunday 5/10. Boy was I excited!! Now I will have the flexibility to schedule my trip as I desire: I have enough miles for two round trip award tickets. I wanted to travel for five days, but due to AA scheduling, we had to travel for a full week with my family of 4 to take advantage of the award (two awards, and two purchased). Now all 4 of us can fly round trip together on the days we want. We’ll head out on our one way award tickets and return on a different airline that has seats availabile on the day we want.

Kudos to American for giving it’s customers added flexibility – something that’s been rare lately.
Give them extra kudos for not charging extra miles (25,000 mi./2 = 15,000 mi.?) or a fee for that added benefit.
