Yes, You Can Get a Meal for 5-Bucks at the Airport – in Philly, Anyway

May 18, 2009 | Posted in: Ask Rick,Passengers | 0 comments

Sometimes it seems like the only thing you can get in an airport for about $5 is a bottle of water. Food? Forget it – but that’s changing in Philly.

“Wow! $5 Chow” is the name of the new food promotion at Philadelphia International Airport -you’ll see it at about 50 of the airport restaurants there. Sample $5 meals include eggs and coffee, a basil/mozzarella sandwich, dessert and coffee – things like that.

It makes for a nice change from $8 sandwiches and $3 candy bars.

And I see that a similar program is underway at LaGuardia as well. Let’s hope the idea catches on every bit as quickly as bag fees (ouch – did I just say that?).

British Airways to Begin Flights to Las Vegas

May 18, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Europe | 0 comments

Good news for Las Vegas, which has been suffering mightily in these rough, economic times: British Airways is coming!

I don’t suppose we can say, “coming to the rescue” but it certainly may help, and Las Vegas needs all the help it can get, with a 10% unemployment rate, and visitors to Sin City down nearly 9%.

However, BA’s new service won’t begin until October – when it will begin daily to/from flights between Heathrow and McCarran.

A British Airways spokesman indicated the airline should not have trouble filling the Vegas planes – and then he added, “We’ve got to get people moving again.” Absolutely. And since “Heathrow is where the world changes planes”, it seems like a very workable idea.

VIDEO: Comic says, How Bad is Flying Today? Not as Bad as You Think!

May 17, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Ask Rick,Multimedia,Passengers | 0 comments

I was laughing at comedian Louis CK on Conan the other night (and if you haven’t seen him before, you’re in for a treat).

But after I was done laughing, I found myself really thinking about his amazing take on our “age-of-miracles”. When you really put it all in perspective, just how bad is commercial aviation these days? Not too bad, really.

See what you think after watching this hilarious video. It’s about 4 minutes long – but it’s worth it.

Does British Airways/AA Deal Threaten Virgin Atlantic?

May 15, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News | 2 comments

Richard Branson sure thinks so.

He’s calling the 11-airline “oneworld” alliance that includes BA, American Airlines, Iberia and others – “disastrous” – and claims it will allow the “two largest dominant carriers to increase their stranglehold by setting price together and agreeing schedules.”

The flamboyant head of the Virgin empire added, “it will be the end of red-hot competition.”

A spokesman for American Airlines responded that Sir Richard’s comments were “rife with overgeneralizations, hyperbole and just plain old inaccuracies.” But Branson is pressing his case with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, asking them to block the deal that would grant the alliance anti-trust immunity.

FEE ALERT II: Attention Ryanair Passengers

May 15, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News | 3 comments

If you thought the new, higher bag fees for airport bag check-in on United and US Airways were disheartening, wait’ll you hear this:

Starting next week, Europe’s discount carrier Ryanair will begin charging passengers 10 pounds (that’s $15+) to print out an electronic boarding pass. It had been free.

And woe to those who show up at the airport without that boarding pass – those passengers will have to shell out another 40 pounds — $61-as a “re-issue fee”!

Yes, Ryanair’s flights are cheap – extremely cheap – but when you start adding up all their fees, and the effort involved in keeping track of them all, it makes you wonder if it’s worth it…

FEE ALERT: United & US Airways Raise Bag Fees (except online)

May 15, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,United,US Airways | 3 comments

If you pay your bag fees at the airport, you’re going to pay more – when you fly United Airlines or US Airways.

Both airlines are upping fees by $5 – new prices will be $20 for the first checked bag and $30 for the second. However, if you pay the fee on the airline’s website, you pay the “old” price of $15/$25. United’s policy kicks in for travel starting June 10, and US Airways starts July 9.

I love how the airlines are characterizing this change as a way to save: on United’s website, the jaunty text reads, “Prepay & save!” while US Airways touts its new “lower fee online!”

Okay, this won’t affect most of us – but it will affect what is being called the infrequent leisure traveler – especially the non-techies among us. Which means, next time Grandma comes out for a visit, I think YOU had better make the reservations for her (and my apologies to all computer-savvy Grandmas and Grandpas out there — I know your numbers are growing).

Weird, Wacky & Wonderful Summer Vacation Ideas – for Cheap

May 14, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Destinations,Holiday Travel | 1 comment

Well, the first one isn’t all that weird…

Los Angeles is quite the bargain these days for travelers – that’s according to USA Today.

Certainly there are plenty of cheap flights there this summer: it took me all of two seconds to find this cheap flight from New York to Los Angeles and this cheap flight from Dallas to LA using FareCompare’s Deal Finder – both flights are priced at under $250 roundtrip.

Once you’re done exploring the splendors of LA, why not drive up the coast to the town of Gilroy – home of the famous Garlic Festival. I’ve heard this annual July event is a lot of fun – and where else will you get a chance to sample garlic ice cream?

Since I’m in a festival frame of mind, anyone for the Road Kill Cook-Off? That’s in Marlington, West Virginia – and no, the food does not contain actual road-kill – the recipes just call for the kind of creature one might find…uh, in the road. Fly into Charleston, WV – I found this cheap flight from Atlanta to Charleston, again for under $250.

A final thought – Australia is on sale this summer – a terrific country filled with terrific people.

Spain will Reward Airlines That Carry More Passengers

May 14, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Europe,Passengers | 0 comments

The tourism industry in Spain (like everywhere) is taking a hit: passenger arrivals were down more than 16% in the first quarter of this year.

What to do?

Simple, according to the Spanish government – airlines that raise their passenger numbers during the first 6 months of this year (compared to the last 6 months of 2008) won’t have to pay any airport taxes for the rest of the year!

Hmm. The four Spanish airline associations aren’t too keen on this, calling the move “discriminatory and confusing”. I don’t know about that, but it strikes me as way too late – I mean, the six-month period in question is going to end in a couple of weeks – how to make up so much ground, in so little time?

As long as I’m on the subject, we do have some great cheap flights to Spain - check them out.
