ABCNews.com – Those $9 Airfares – Too Good to be True?

June 3, 2009 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airfare News,Airline News

I did tell you about JetAmerica’s $9 airfares, coming next month – but, as we all know, they’re not exactly $9 – not when you add up all the fees and taxes and charges for this and that.

By the way, “this” and “that” includes a $5 “convenience” fee – convenient for who? The airline, I guess, since I sure don’t find paying an extra 5-bucks particularly convenient.

You know where this is heading – these super-duper-cheapie fares wind up costing 3 or 4 times the advertised price – still a bargain, sure, but c’mon – how about a little bit more transparency? On the other hand, it works for airlines like Spirit and Ryanair. Okay, but…

Here’s what really worries me: the legacy carriers getting into the act.

When the big-boys start adding in all these fees – without rebranding themselves as “discount airlines” – aren’t they in danger of losing their identity – and customers?

Read all about it in my latest column on ABCNews.com – and tell me what you think.

We (I) made a mistake trying to arrange a LAS-DTW flight for my wife a year or so ago for $9, think. It was totally a mistake, much to Spirit’s favor. The web site for this was manic/schizophrenic/ idiotic/vague/almost useless for guidance. I thought Spirit should be tarred and feathered.
Amidst their (?planned?) confusion I finally waited a half hour or so on their 800 tel #. The operator couldn’t helpl me and believe he hung up. I tried again, since it’s so nice to have a means to waste away my time. He finally admitted that the web site wasn’t working properly and he had had constant calls complaining about the inability to find the $9 fares. After all this frustration, Spirit succeeded in hoodwinking, probably many people besides me, in paying full prices for fares. My govt agency complaint was coordinating with a paper tiger-worthless. Spirit could care less about letting me fly for $9.
My wife took the trip and vows never to fly Spirit again.
The govt has a unique capacity to speak forcefully and do nothing.
