Continental Joining the “Little Guys” with Satellite TV

July 30, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Ask Rick

Continental has been installing DirecTV on 18 of its planes – and in the next couple of years, expects to offer it on more than 200 of its jets.

Obviously, they hope it will set them apart from other legacy carriers – and maybe position them as a “must fly” airline. Right now, fliers on JetBlue, Virgin America and Frontier already enjoy live TV.

And, enjoy they do – one of my employees says she always tries to fly the “little guys” with the TV screens, because it makes time pass more quickly (she also confessed, she doesn’t always put her headphones on – just gapes mindlessly at the pictures).

Would TV push you in the direction of Continental? Now what if you had to pay for it – Continental charges economy customers $6 for the service – while JetBlue and VA are free. Thoughts?

You’ve forgotten about Delta. While their live TV (from Dish Network) is only equipped on a portion of their fleet (767-300 Domestic [76P/76Q], 737-700, 737-800 [They are in the process on installing this on the entire 737-800 fleet.], and the 757s in the Transcontinental layout [75X].

I flew on Continental on July 11 2009 and the tv’s could not boot. I want my refund since I was charged for this. How do I request my refund?

  3. Scott says:

Um, i would NOT pay to see the TV. That’s why I carry a DVD player for my daughter.
But if there were little cost difference, FREE tv might just make a difference in who I fly with.

Frontier charges 6.00 or offers an upgrade ticket that includes the DirectTV and one checked baggage. I take this option every time. Continental should consider this. It is worth every penney.

Just something extra in the airlines pockets. I woundn’t pay for TV. I rarely watch at home. I’d rather read a book or catch up on the magazines.

    June,
You have to contact Continental about this.

    Casey,
I’d rather read too but these little screens can be lifesavers when traveling with children. And I like to watch every now and then; it seems to make the flight time pass a little more quickly.
