More Insider Stuff: The Airlines in Mid-Year

July 23, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Pricing Activity,Travel Tips | 0 comments

“Very challenging times.”

That statement, or some variation of it, was made by one airline after another – as we listened in on the 2nd quarter earnings conference calls from AirTran, Alaska, Allegiant, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, United and US Airways.

All sounded somewhat optimistic – cautiously, as they say – but all seem to feel that recovery will take time. As one United executive put it, “Courage doesn’t pay right now, in terms of making your business decisions on optimistic assumptions.”

And an Allegiant exec mentioned some concern that customers are getting “conditioned” to expect low airfares, especially in an overall retail environment where everything is perpetually “on sale”.

Last week, I blogged about American Airlines’ loss – and now, some nuggets from the other airlines. Keep reading…

A Good Reason to Linger at LAX – Pink’s Hot Dogs is Coming

July 23, 2009 | Posted in: Ask Rick,Favorites | 0 comments

Yes, the famous Pink’s Hot Dogs – a Hollywood institution for 70 years – is coming to LAX.

Later this year, a new location will open in Los Angeles International’s Tom Bradley International Terminal. That should zip things up a bit.

The owners describe Pink’s as “Hot Dogs to the Stars!” and they have the pictures on the website to prove it, including photos of Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, Aerosmith and naturally enough, Snoop Dog.

Fans of the menu say, try the Pastrami & Cheese Dog – the Guadalajara Dog – or the Three Dog Night (a triple wiener, of course).

And for our friends in Vegas, watch for a Pink’s opening soon at the Planet Hollywood Casino there.

Airfare Question with No Easy Answer: To Buy or Not to Buy?

Maybe you saw Michelle Higgins recent airfare story in the New York Times. It asks the burning question:

Buy airfare now? Or wait for better deals?

Let me try to elaborate a bit more on that – but it’s a tough one. Here’s why: as I said in the Times article

“There’s no history for where we are now. As much as consumers are struck trying to figure out when to buy, airlines are struggling to price seats.”

Indulge me a minute – and imagine the airlines as an ice cream shop – that booms in the summer.

The ice cream store is doing well when suddenly – BAM! — the “city” decides it’s time to do lengthy street repairs, right in front of the shop (for who knows how long). Now, it’s difficult for customers to get to the store, and the store has no idea how much ice cream to order. Traffic has slowed, so the store tries everything – 2-for-1 specials, other discounts. Then, another blow: the little league team that used to come in regularly and order all the most expensive treats now chows down on snacks provided by parents.

This is what the airlines are faced with – they have no way of knowing how to price anymore, plus, their best customers – the business travelers – aren’t showing up anymore.

So exactly how much is “too much” to pay for airfare? Coming right up – so keep reading…

Here We Go Again: Continental Hikes Bag Fees at Airport

July 22, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News | 3 comments

Well, Continental – join the crowd.

The airline is now also slapping another $5 on your checked-bag fee, if you check the bag at the airport.

You can avoid this fee, if you check the bag online — the price to check a bag online remains at $15 for the first, $20 for the second (and those prices are one-way).

BEST ADVICE: Others will follow – so if you will be checking a bag, just automatically check-in online (where possible). And see our Domestic Fee Chart for the latest changes.

UPDATE: Airline Apologizes for “Frisking” Ex-Pres. of India

July 22, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Security | 1 comment

Perhaps you saw my earlier post – about the uproar over the “international incident” involving the former president of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Couple of things to add:

1.) Continental has apologized – and said, “We sincerely hope he will fly with us again.”

2.) Here’s what the “frisking” involved – according to the BBC, the former president “was made to remove his shoes and empty out the contents of his pockets, and a hand-held metal detector was run over his body.”

Sound familiar? Of course it does – it’s the same thing you and I go through every time we fly.

Question: Should government officials (and former ones) be exempt? Should all of us be exempt?

I’ve Expanded My “Don’t Say This” List for ABCNews.com

July 22, 2009 | Posted in: ABC Column,List,Passengers | 0 comments

I know some of you read (and seemed to like) my earlier “list” post – the “Eight Things You Should Never Say on a Plane” – and I was asked to expand it just a bit, by ABC.

So that’s what my latest weekly column for ABCNews.com is all about: the Ten Things Not to Say Aboard an Airplane.

Are there any topics in particular you’d like me to tackle? Just let me know in the comments section.

You’re not Alone: India in Uproar over TSA “Frisk” of Ex-Pres.

July 21, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Ask Rick,DOT,News,Security | 0 comments

Well, at least you know others get angry over the TSA screening process.

The people of India – certainly, the people that write for their newspapers – have erupted in anger over the treatment of former Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The incident goes back to last April, when the 77 year old Mr. Kalam was about to board a Continental flight to New York and was apparently “frisked” (those are the words used by Indan authorities). Civil aviation officials in New Delhi accused Continental of “gross violation of Indian security rules that prohibit pre-embarkation body checks” on certain dignitaries.

The filed a complaint against Continental today. However, the airline has said it was only following U.S. security procedures- and noted that the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) makes the final security check.

The incident is a hot topic on flyertalk – comments include, 1.) it’s time to do away with these onerous security checks, and 2.) “Hey, at least he didn’t pull a ‘do you know who I am?’”
