Dave Carroll of the folk/rock group “Sons of Maxwell” (as well as his own solo career), sent an email to our editor explaining his second United-bashing song.
Carroll’s the guy who saw United baggage handlers toss his guitar in the air – it broke – and he spent months trying to get compensation, but United said “no”. That is, until he produced his first music video, the wildly popular “United Breaks Guitars”.
Carroll told us, “United made an offer within 4 days of the release of Song 1″ involving cash and vouchers, but at that point, he didn’t want the money – so United made a donation to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazzin his name – “certainly a bright spot in the whole affair”.
Situation resolved, so – why a second song? Keep reading for: 1.) the answer 2.) United’s response and 3.) to see the video of Song 2!
Carroll said he composed another song about United and the breaking of guitars because – he promised he would. In fact, he promised he’d come up with three music videos: “I was committed to following through on what I said I would do when they said they would do nothing.”
A gracious Robin Urbanski of United PR responded to our email about all this by saying she “now considers Dave my BFF (best friend forever)” – and added the airline has already provided “our agents with a better way to escalate and respond to special situations.”
Here’s Song 2 – and we’ll be keeping an eye out for Song 3.
MeowMix,
I’m a big proponent of not only not checking valuables, but leaving them at home. Still, that won’t work for a band on tour.
A friend in the news business once told me that network cameramen used to buy a full price seat for their big TV videocams (under the name, “Mr. Camera”) but the airlines don’t allow that anymore.
Are there any musicians out there who fly with instruments with any tips for our readers?
Rick
Well I disagree about the bitterness and vindictiveness.
This United Breaks Guitars: Song 2 was written before the first even came out on You Tube.
I think its immature and childish and ignorant too of Ms Urbanski to think that Dave Carroll would even consider her a ‘buddy’ let alone a “BFF.” Ms Irlweg would have better luck there!
The AFM and Taylor Guitars both have good tips out there for traveling Musicians…
They now seem bitter and vindictive. They should let it go. Everyone knows you don’t check valuable items.

UA still allows you to buy seats for instruments. Yo Yo Ma’s Cello is a Premier Executive on United.
