Audio: Pilot Pleads to Deplane, Calls Situation “Ridiculous”

August 24, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Ask Rick,Delays,News,Storms | 2 comments

Remember those folks who were trapped on the tarmac in Rochester, Minn. earlier this month when a Continental flight operated by ExpressJet diverted there to avoid storms?

Thanks to the AP, we now have audio (below) of the pilot repeatedly asking that the passengers be allowed inside. In fact, you can clearly hear the pilot saying, “This is getting to be ridiculous”. Earlier, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood weighed in, praising the crew and characterizing the situation as “a complete lack of common sense.”

Question: LaHood seemed to shift blame to employees of Mesaba Airlines – apparently the only staff in the airport at that late hour — Mesaba disagrees with his findings — but, you mean to tell me there was no way to contact any airport officials? If not, why?

FEE ALERT: American Raises International Check-in Rates

August 23, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Europe | 0 comments

This time, American Airlines is raising rates for international travelers.

Beginning September 14, economy passengers flying from the U.S. to India and most of Europe (including Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland) will now pay a fee for a second checked-bag – a hefty $50 (the first checked-bag is still free).

This will not apply to elite fliers, or those lucky enough to fly in business or first class.

As some of you know, I recently got back from Europe – a nearly 2-week long vacation – and I went the carryon route. Yes, it can be done.

More details on the fee change here – and a hat tip to Stanford student David Newell for alerting us to the change.

Football and Flying: What’s Your Team’s “Official Airline”?

August 21, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Sports | 3 comments

The NFL pre-season is already a week old – so I thought I’d combine two of my passions and talk about some of the “official airlines” of football. For instance, American Airlines is now the “official airline” of the New England Patriots.

Interestingly, not all airline PR folks are quite up on their NFL/”official airline” status – I was amused at how many told us “we’ll have to get back to you on that.”

Well, it can be confusing: after all, the Minnesota Vikings, previously represented by Northwest, now play for Delta – Northwest’s major merger partner.

And while American Airlines was proud to announce they are now the “official airline” for the Patriots, a spokesman for the carrier admitted (maybe a little sheepishly) they’re also the “official airline” for the Cowboys…and, the Rams. Now, that’s what I call playing the field!

Fall Fare Sales: Grab Them – Cuts are Deeper than Usual

August 21, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Deals,News | 0 comments

I told you earlier that the fall airfare sale season has officially begun.

But I just want to make it clear how good it really is: as I told the AP, prices are “absolutely superb” compared to this time last year.

One point I want to make, and this is true most of the time: the cheapest airfares are not always on the most convenient flights. Some airlines have blackout dates for travel on Fridays and Sundays for their rock-bottom rates – and others attach their cheapest prices to connecting flights.

But if you can put up with a connection or two, you will find great savings. Go check out FareCompare’s deal finder tool – and see for yourself, right now. Or let us do all the work – just follow FareCompare deals “from your airport” on Twitter.

FEE ALERT: Virgin America Raises Bag Fees

August 21, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News | 0 comments

Virgin America is raising its checked-bag fees from a flat $15 a bag, to a flat $20 a bag.

In other words, your first checked bag is $20, the second is $20, and the third is $20. I want to note that a third checked bag for 20-bucks is a bargain, but – how many of us check three bags?

These price hikes mostly affect the “Main Cabin” folks – VA’s economy class -all others will get at least the first checked-bag for free.

Bright spot: Virgin has not changed its very generous weight allowance for that first checked-bag – it can weigh up to 70 lbs. (compared to 40 or 50 lb. weight limits).

See all the details here.

Hey, it’s Friday – Naked Man Removed from Southwest Plane

A 21-year old man traveling aboard a Southwest Airlines plane traveling from Oakland to St. Louis somehow thought it would be a good idea to take off all his clothes and start yelling and punching his seatmate.

Naturally, this drew the attention of the flight attendants, and just about everyone else on the plane – it’s hard to ignore a 6’1″ 300 pound naked man in your midst – but he was eventually subdued while the plane turned back for Oakland where he was arrested.

Not sure what his problem was, but he did have an outstanding arrest warrant on drug-related charges.

Something similar happened aboard a US Airways flight last month, where another passenger found it expedient to disrobe – and flatly refused to travel with clothing.

Sometimes I wonder – should we be calling them “fight” attendants?

Video: KC Airport Hires Clowns to Promote Cheap Parking

August 20, 2009 | Posted in: Multimedia | 2 comments

Did you know the price of “economy parking” at Missouri’s Kansas City International Airport is still just $5.50 a day?

Well, somebody doesn’t know, because the lots are half empty – and since parking is the airport’s number one revenue stream, KC officials spent about $120K to make a TV commercial as a reminder.

It’s very amusing – a bunch of goofballs clowning around – take a look:

JetBlue’s “All You Can Jet” Pass is History – All Sold Out

August 20, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News | 3 comments

If you put off getting one of JetBlue’s “All You Can Jet” pass for $599, you put it off for too long – the airline says, they just ran out.

According to an earlier JetBlue tweet, an airline employee said, “We had overwhelming response”. I guess so.

Let’s see, the pass – good for travel anywhere JetBlue flies, from Sept. 8 through Oct. 8 – was on sale for all of, what…9 days? That was quick.

I’d love to hear from readers who took advantage of the offer – tell us how good a bargain it turned out to be. My guess is a lot of business travelers will be using it.
