How to Avoid Travel Snafus During G20 Summit in Pittsburgh

August 20, 2009 | Posted in: Ask Rick,Delays,News,Security | 0 comments

On Sept. 24 and 25, the big G20 Summit will take place in Pittsburgh – and schools will close, courts will close – but city officials say the airport will remain open.

Still, there will be more dignitaries in town than you can shake a stick at, from all over the world, so it only makes sense to follow these common sense guidelines from the airport (which includes good advice to follow any time):

  • 1. Leave extra early for the airport; may be road closures
  • 2. Use electronic ticketing and bag check-in to save time
  • 3. Be patient: expect extra long lines for security
  • 4. Watch out for protests – the G20 meetings attract them
  • Baseball fans, don’t worry — the Pirates will be playing their home games.

Airport Has “Official Writer” – Why Not, “Official Fixer”?

August 20, 2009 | Posted in: Ask Rick | 4 comments

You may have heard by now that Heathrow has hired a writer-in-residence, who wants to make it very clear that he can write about anything he wants – the good, the bad, and the horrible about the London airport – and air travel.

Fine. Literature is a wonderful thing, but – let’s get practical here. Airports (and airlines) have lots of room for improvement and I don’t see any writer fixing these problems.

How about this for an idea? An “airport ombudsman”?

You know, someone you could go to with complaints – who would then take action.

Keep reading – I need you to tell me if I’m all wet or not.

Ill? No Problem! Free Health Insurance for Mexico City Tourists

August 19, 2009 | Posted in: Ask Rick,Travel Safety,Travel Tips | 1 comment

Remember the first outbreaks of “swine flu” -H1N1 – and how Mexico City started looking like a ghost town?

Well, it’s bounced back some, but they’re still looking for more tourists – and now they’re trying to lure them with what the Los Angeles Times calls “unusual bait” – free health insurance.

This is a new program called “Tourism Assistance Card” for tourists who stay in participating hotels, and it provides free coverage for emergency medical care, hospital stays, prescription drugs – and even ambulances. You can find more information here at the Mexico City tourism website.

And yes, you can always find cheap flights to Mexico with FareCompare’s deal finder.

New Video from “United Breaks Guitars” Guy Plus Insider Info

August 19, 2009 | Posted in: Ask Rick,Multimedia,United | 4 comments

Dave Carroll of the folk/rock group “Sons of Maxwell” (as well as his own solo career), sent an email to our editor explaining his second United-bashing song.

Carroll’s the guy who saw United baggage handlers toss his guitar in the air – it broke – and he spent months trying to get compensation, but United said “no”. That is, until he produced his first music video, the wildly popular “United Breaks Guitars”.

Carroll told us, “United made an offer within 4 days of the release of Song 1″ involving cash and vouchers, but at that point, he didn’t want the money – so United made a donation to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in his name – “certainly a bright spot in the whole affair”.

Situation resolved, so – why a second song? Keep reading for: 1.) the answer 2.) United’s response and 3.) to see the video of Song 2!

Trapped on Tarmac Payout: Is Continental being a Cheapskate?

August 19, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Ask Rick,Delays,Passengers,Storms | 1 comment

What is a night out of your life worth?

Maybe I’d better rephrase that: what is a night out of your life worth when it’s spent trapped on an airplane with 48 other passengers (including screaming babies) and the toilet is starting to reek?

I blogged about the original outrage earlier this month – where an ExpressJet flight (operated by Continental) was diverted from Minneapolis to nearby Rochester because of storms, but the passengers were inexplicably not allowed off the plane – and spent about 9 hours stuck on the tarmac.

USA Today reports Continental sent individual letters of apology to each passenger, a promise to refund those “hell flight” tickets, a $200 voucher for future flights, and a $50 gift card. Some passengers say, that’s not anywhere near enough.

Your thoughts: Are the passengers being greedy? Or is the airline being cheap?

ABC Column: My Trip to Italy, and Why I Lost No Bags

Alright, I won’t keep you in suspense: I didn’t lose any bags because I didn’t check any bags (and here’s the complete column at ABCNews.com).

Yep, for a two week trip, my family and I each took a roller-board on the plane, along with a small “personal item” sized carryon – and that was that!

This is what I tell you to do, and I’d be a hypocrite not to do it myself and believe me – it can be done, even for a two week trip. I’ve seen too many friends who’ve had their vacations ruined by lost luggage, and I didn’t want that to happen to us (the visit to Italy was fantastico, by the way).
