Expert Says, Proper Onboard Attire Could Save Your Life

September 2, 2009 | Posted in: Tips and Tricks,Travel Safety

A serious topic: Proper attire for passengers may be as important as oxygen masks – should anything happen to your aircraft.

I was reminded of this by a retired American Airlines employee who read my recent ABCNews column about travel “fashions” – and wanted to be sure we were aware of the importance of “safe clothing”.

She cited this Wiki article: It notes that, in an emergency, stiletto heels can hinder escape, either by slowing you down or damaging a chute. Flimsy sandals make you vulnerable to foot injuries, and you need healthy feet to get off an aircraft in a hurry. Wear sneakers or “hard shoes” and forget nylons – way too flammable.
