TSA Nominee is Top LAX Intelligence Cop, Ex-FBI Agent

September 11, 2009 | Posted in: DOT,News,Security

Quite a resume Erroll Southers has.

Southers, who is Pres. Obama’s choice to head up the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is currently chief of the homeland security and intelligence departments for the LAX police (not to be confused with the LAPD). It’s a pretty big deal: with 1,200 employees, LAX has the nation’s largest airport security operation.

And the former FBI agent, who was deputy director for homeland security in California, is also an associate director of the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events at USC.

Plus, he’s made a bit of a splash at LAX: as UPI reports, Southers “ordered more weaponry for the [LAX] officers, increased the emphasis on intelligence and had his officers train with security members from Israel’s El Al Airlines.”

Obviously, he takes security very seriously.
