Flight Attendants Star in New TV Show, “Fly Girls”. Hmm.

September 24, 2009 | Posted in: Flight Attendants | 2 comments

Oh, my.

The CW channel has announced that it will debut a new reality TV show a little later this fall called “Fly Girls” – which will feature real-live Virgin America flight attendants.

The description of this “docu-series” has me chuckling. According to CW execs, it’s about “real, down-to-earth young women who happen to have landed in an exceptionally glamorous, high-flying career filled with exotic locations and handsome strangers.”

Let’s compare “Fly Girls” to the daily drudgery of real flight attendants, shall we? Keep reading…

Top 5 Worst Airline Jobs

September 23, 2009 | Posted in: Ask Rick,Flight Attendants,List,Pilots | 3 comments

Here’s a sad statistic: Employment at U.S. airlines has just hit a 16 year low.

Terrible – both for the people who’ve lost their jobs, and for us passengers who’ve long depended on these folks.

So who’d want to join this industry? Good question – but just in case your kid asks your advice (hah!) on employment opportunities, here is my list of the five worst airline industry jobs.

Believe me, this has nothing to do with the great people who hold these jobs now – most of them work very hard at what they do and deserve our thanks. It’s just that, thanks to the financial mess that the airline industry is in, these jobs now lack opportunity, or security, or pay – or all of the above.

So keep reading – to see my picks for the Top 5 Worst Airline Jobs…

Passenger Bill of Rights – Law Gets Closer to Reality

September 23, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Delays,Passengers,Travel Tips | 0 comments

Anyone remember those terrible storms in Dallas, back in Dec. 2006?

That’s when the push for a “passenger bill of rights” really began – when planeloads of people where stuck on the tarmac for 8-hours – or more.

A pretty big name is now onboard this particular bandwagon:

Robert Crandall, former CEO of American Airlines and a legend in the industry (he is credited with “inventing” frequent flier miles clubs) said overall, he supports this legislation – though he’d prefer the 3-hour maximum “on the tarmac” time be extended to 4-hours.

Airline Seat Shortage Coming — See My ABC Column

September 23, 2009 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airfare News,Travel Tips | 0 comments

You know the airlines are cutting seats – they’re really slashing away at them (and if you don’t know this, take a look at my latest chart to see how many passenger seats your city has lost).

What this means to you: First, a seat shortage likely means a rise in prices – and second, it could ultimately lead to rationed flying. At the very least, it could make finding last-minute flights, a whole lot harder.

Practical tip: Don’t volunteer to be “bumped” from your flight, unless the airline can guarantee that you’ll be on the next flight, as opposed to the next available flight. Unless, of course, you have all the time in the world.

There’s lots more — in my latest weekly column for ABCNews.com.

Winners & Losers: Airlines Cut Seats, and It’s Going to Hurt

September 22, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Destinations,Holiday Travel,Travel Tips | 0 comments

We knew it was coming – airlines slashing seats or “cutting capacity” as they like to say.

So what?

I’ll tell you what. Seating capacity is a way for the airlines to control pricing -fewer seats means more of them will be filled, and prices can be raised. Supply and demand, pure and simple.

See our holiday travel chart with the “biggest loser” cities, as well as one very big winner in the cheap flight sweepstakes.

Losers include Cincinnati, which will have lost 23% percent of its seats by the day before Thanksgiving 2009, compared to the day before the holiday, last year — and Hartford is second on the list, down 14% — followed closely by Tampa, down 12%.

The big winner? Milwaukee – it gained nearly 30% more seats in the past year.

Airline Fees – in the Billions, and Counting

September 22, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,DOT | 1 comment

I’m sure the airlines would like to say a personal “thank you” to each and every one of us, for all those times we eschewed the carryon to check a bag.

They should – according to the latest figures from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, in the second quarter of this year alone, those bag fees added up to just a hair under $670 million!

And as Terry Maxon points out in the Dallas Morning News, fees collected in the past 12 months add up to a gargantuan $2.3 billion.

Do you recall why the bag fees went into effect? To help offset the high fuel prices – which came down of course. But the money keeps rolling in, and good thing, too, I suppose – bag fees may be all that’s keeping some airlines afloat. Or, maybe I should say – aloft.

How to Find Cheap Tickets When Flight Dates Aren’t Firm

September 21, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Ask Rick,Tips and Tricks,Travel Tips | 0 comments

Let’s imagine someone in your family is having a baby – and you want to be there for them.

But “due dates” are notorious for being off a week (or two) – is there any way to still get an airfare that won’t break the bank?

There is indeed. And We”ve got the answers in our handy dandy guide to Airline Ticket Buying Strategies When Departure Dates are Uncertain.

Quick Do’s and Don’ts: Don’t wait until the last minute to buy your tickets; Do look for an airline that does not impose a “change fee” like Southwest, or an airline that charges a nominal “change fee” (see the FareCompare.com Airline Fee Chart for more); Do use trip insurance; and if necessary, Do use frequent flier miles.

Again, see all the details in our new post on scoring the cheapest airline ticket when your flight dates aren’t firm.
