Bad Passengers: Still Bringing Banned Items thru TSA Security

September 21, 2009 | Posted in: DOT,Security,Travel Safety | 4 comments

Bad passengers! I sound like I’m chastising a naughty dog, but –why are you still trying to bring machetes and more through TSA security lines??

Hard to believe, I know, but that’s what’s happening according to a fascinating article on CNN.com.

Why does it happen? Well, apparently even after all these years, folks don’t know any better – or they forget – like the new bride who didn’t know the wedding gift in her carryon was a banned item. The gift: a set of kitchen knives.

But what on earth can you say about the man who tried to bring two gallons of gasoline aboard a plane?

His explanation: he was worried he’d run out of gas on his drive home from the airport!

So – what happens to all this stuff? Keep reading…

Elite Status for Frequent Fliers – Easier to Earn than Ever

September 21, 2009 | Posted in: Frequent Flyer | 0 comments

You know what “elite” status as a frequent flier mileage club member gets you? A lot more than free flights.

How about no baggage fees, or priority boarding? Wouldn’t you like to be among the first to get at that overhead bin space? Plus, better seat selection, priority security lines, and more.

So check out the latest promotions from US Airways, American, Continental and United; they’re all offering short-cuts to elite status.

US Airways, for example, allows you to fly 15,000 miles or 20 flight segments from now til Dec. 25 and – bingo – you are Gold Preferred Status, which normally requires 50K miles.

Attention all business travelers — this post is especially for you.

Halloween – Cheap Flights to Find Ghosts (Sneak Preview)

September 18, 2009 | Posted in: Destinations,Favorites,Holiday Travel | 0 comments

I know it’s early, but Halloween is on a Saturday this year – and some of you may want to start making plans.

Next week, my plan is to give you some fun and ghostly destinations. Okay, I can’t guarantee any ghosts, but these places are said to be haunted.

One of which is the old Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.

Now when I say “old”, yes, the Roosevelt has been around since 1927 – but it is a certified hot spot for today’s A List who gather at the hotel’s famous Teddy’s Lounge and Tropicana Bar.

UPDATE: Little-Used “Airport to Nowhere” Keeps Money

September 18, 2009 | Posted in: Travel Tips | 1 comment

The WSJ called out John P. Murtha Airport in Johnstown, Pennsylvania recently; which has 20 or so passengers a day.

The airport received $25 million to build stronger runways for military jets that apparently don’t fly there and $8 million for an unused radar system.

An amendment to stop just one of the subsidies – the $1.4 million annual payment for airport traffic – was up for a vote yesterday … and lost …

Airplanes & Idiots: Lifetime Ban for Bad Passengers?

September 18, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,News,Passengers,Security | 3 comments

UPDATE: A local TV station reports the FBI is now questioning a couple of flight attendants.

You watch the news, you know what’s going on.

The country is uneasy. There’s anxiety out there. And fear. Fear over loss of jobs, of savings, of security. And fear of the unknown.

And someone can touch off those fears, wielding nothing more than a pen and paper.

I’m talking about that someone – presumably a passenger? – who left a note in one of the bathrooms of a Boston-bound American Airlines jet yesterday, claiming there was a bomb on board.

The plane was already 45 minutes into its journey when it was found.

The pilot, understandably, turned around and went back to Miami. The 168 passengers were taken off the plane which was then searched. Nothing was found. Keep reading, I’ve got lots more to say about idiots on airplanes…

Business Travel Boost -Why That’s Important for ALL of Us

September 18, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Airline News,Pricing Activity | 0 comments

Okay, business travel demand is still on the weak side, but…according to Reuters, international airline officials say the decline that we’ve seen all year is slowing.

Good news for the airlines: Any uptick, especially in expensive business class, will help their bottom line.

Good news for passengers: Healthier business class ticket sales can reduce leisure price pressure.

Less good news for passengers: Stronger demand, slides airline ticket pricing power to the airlines side of the 50 yard line.

Back to the good news: Anything that makes airlines stronger is a plus, since airlines that go out of business do us fliers no good at all. Fewer airlines means less competition and, higher prices.

Spirit Airlines: Cheap Flights? Check. Humongous Fine? Check.

September 17, 2009 | Posted in: Ask Rick,DOT | 3 comments

Spirit Airlines has been fined by the Dept. of Transportation for a variety of sins, including failing to comply with rules regarding “bumping”, advertising, lost bags – and more.

For those keeping score, the fine was $375,000 which the DOT says is a record. Here’s details on why the airline was fined, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal:

“Spirit bumped passengers from oversold flights, but did not provide compensation or a written notice of their rights to compensation as required. Spirit also failed to resolve baggage claims within a reasonable period, on one occasion taking 14 months to provide compensation.”LA Business Journal, 9-17-09

And what do folks from Spirit have to say about all this? To their credit, they’ve been making changes. Keep reading for more…
