Pilot Flies Again – 18 Months After Gun Goes Off in Cockpit

Some of you may recall this March 2008 incident – when US Airways pilot Capt. Jim Langenhahn’s gun accidentally as he was stowing it toward the end of a Denver-Charlotte flight, and ripped a hole in the cockpit wall and fuselage.

Fortunately, no one was hurt – but the pilot’s career took a hit – US Airways fired him.

Quick background: the pilot was allowed to have the gun with him, per a 2002 federal law – and he’d successfully completed the necessary TSA firearm training courses.

Anyway, the pilot appealed the firing, eventually getting help from the Dept. of Homeland Security, which faulted the design of holster which, according to the AP, was said to “increase the chance of accidental discharge”.

The newly reinstated pilot, however, is now banned from having a gun in the cockpit.
