Southwest Airlines Adds Flights, But Not in “Growth Mode”

October 14, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Southwest

When Southwest Airlines reported it would be adding 18 flights out of BWI, it was easy to assume the carrier was looking to expand again. After all, in a relatively short period of time, Southwest has launched new service in Boston and Milwaukee, and made a bid (unsuccessful) for Frontier Airlines.

However, the folks at Southwest are quick to point out that the flights out of BWI have nothing to do with expansion:

“To be clear – we are NOT back into growth mode,” Bill Owen, the airline’s lead planner, said in a company blog Tuesday. “We’re able to add all these flights not by adding to our fleet, but by taking advantage of the seasonal decrease in flying time going from winter into spring.” (from the Maryland Daily Record)

The new flights will be good for travel in early March. We’ll keep an eye out to see if Southwest makes any other seasonal adjustments.
