“Got off the plane at LAX Monday night, took my checked-bag off the carousel, tossed it in the trunk and headed for home which is an hour’s drive away.”

“Since it was very late and I had to get up for work in four hours, I left the packed bag on the bedroom floor.”

“I was pretty groggy the next morning but had no trouble hearing my husband say, ‘Why does the bedroom reek of gasoline?!’ Yep, it was my bag.”

“My bag wasn’t wet or anything, and there was no stain, but no question, it stunk of gasoline, and worse — so did all my clothes. I checked my car trunk (pristine, no smell) so it must have happened at the airport or on the plane.”

“Foolishly, I waited until the next day to send the airline an email. Too late! The airline said I had to have reported this – in person – within 24 hours of my flight.”

“Why didn’t I smell it when I grabbed the bag at the airport? Too tired, I guess. And now I’m REALLY tired, thinking about replacing the bag and the clothes – been working on getting rid of the smell for three days with no success.”

“In case you’re wondering, it was American Airlines. But I’ve heard they all have similar policies.”

I think you should write to the head of the airline, and publicize it as I bet your bag isn’t the only one that reeks of gasoline! If others complain as well, you might get some action. Maybe there was a lawyer on board!

Funny how they require you to report it within 24 hours of your flight, when often you don’t even get your bags within 24 hours.

I just don’t understand why airlines require us to pay more to check bags, then delay them or lose them. Shouldn’t they be providing BETTER service for more money, rather than WORSE?

YUP…..heard of this before……bags in trunk for two days as folks weren’t heading home and used their carry on bags…..were told this “could” have been a fire hazzard in their own car!

What good does reporting it right away do? I’ve reported severly damaged bags, missing or damaged things in my bag. The airline doesn’t care. Fill out a form…& we’ll toss it in the trash as soon as you leave.
$300 bottle of tequila we brought back from Mexico. Was wrapped & in a wooden box in a hard top suitcase. TSA unwrapped it when they searched & all we got was shattered glass. For all I know they drank it then broke the bottle & put in back in the bag.
Reporting damage is just a waste of time, when you really just want to go home & sleep.

Last year I bought a new suitcase which I used to travel from Orlando to London. On arrival at London, my suitcase had one wheel torn right off (not just missing), along with a portion of the suitcase itself. Went to the appropriate desk to make a complaint, and was told that it’s a waste of time complaining because the airlines do not accept responsibility for damaged suitcases. I think this is disgusting, considering how much airlines charge to travel these days. (Incidentally it was Continental airlines) I have had problems with other airlines too, and none ever compensate.
