Mystery Solved: Northwest Pilots Weren’t Napping, Just “Busy”

October 26, 2009 | Posted in: News,Northwest,Pilots

What were those two Northwest pilots doing that caused them to miss radio calls and overshoot their Minneapolis destination by more than 100 miles?

Better to ask, what weren’t they doing!

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the pilots were distracted by the following: a bathroom break, talking to a flight attendant, figuring out work schedules, and working on their personal laptops.

By the way, using a personal laptop in the cockpit? A company violation.

Here’s what the pilots say they were not doing: having a heated argument or napping.

Well, I’m glad they weren’t snoozing, but I’m not sure I feel any better about this. Kind of shocking that seasoned pilots could get “distracted” by such mundane matters.

  1. After hearing this whole story develop over the last week or so, I was debating whether it is scarier if it turned out the pilots were napping, or if it is scarier if it turned out the pilots were awake and this still happened. I’m still not sure which one is worse.

Me thinks there may have been some canoodling going on.

So if drivers who text are getting the book thrown at them, what about pilots who text?

I am in the Limousine business. If my VIP chauffeurs would “pull a stunt” comparative to this on the freeway, the credit card companies would be alerted, we would have to refund all the money, american express just takes it without asking what we did: furthermore, we would be blackballed by the general public and the party making the reservation. The compliance people have their work cut out and should act accordingly.

    I don’t believe it.

You know…With the move towards using teenagers because they are good gamers as flight controllers, the antiquated software they have to use, the number of flights in the air at any one time, the cutting back of services of all airlines and the nonsense going on with some of these pilots, I really don’t believe anymore that it’s “safer to fly”. If I’m driving, at least I have some degree of control. This is a direct insult, a slap-in-the-face to our brave hero who just saved a plane full of passengers by landing in the Hudson!
