It’s Official: Cheapest Airfare Since ’98 During April-June

October 28, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,DOT,Pricing Activity,Travel Tips | 1 comment

I know this comes as no surprise to most of my readers, but just for the record:

During the second-quarter of this year (April, May and June), the price of domestic airfare dropped by 13% compared to the same quarter in 2008 – and this year-to-year drop was greater than that seen after the Sept. 11 attacks.

These average second quarter fares of 2009 were almost equal to those seen in the same quarter back in 1998. Almost.

You can see the figures yourself, on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics website.

Meantime, many amazingly cheap airfare sales are now underway. Check out our deals page and save now.

5 Star Airline List – Best Airlines in the World (and worst, too)

October 28, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Favorites,List | 0 comments

I recently came across the Skytrax site – which does market research, analysis and more – for clients that have included Delta and the Star Alliance.

The company has a great motto: they give advice “without fear or favour”. But what I especially like is their airline “star ranking” system.

Skytrax’s highest ranking, 5 Stars, is bestowed upon the usual suspects: Asiana, Kingfisher, Qatar, Singapore, Malaysia and Cathay Pacific (although beside the name, Cathay Pacific, is the somewhat cryptic phrase, “under review”).

So where do U.S. airlines stand? Keep reading – I think you’ll be especially interested in both the “4 Stars” and “2 Stars” categories… 5 Star Airline List – Best Airlines in the World (and worst, too)

So Who Should Board the Plane First?

October 28, 2009 | Posted in: ABC Column,Airline News,Passengers | 5 comments

Who indeed? That’s what I tried to figure out in my latest column for ABCNews.com.

I took a trip down memory lane – back to a time when families with “little ones” had the advantage of being among the first to board – that is until airlines began noticing that more and more “little ones” were 6ft. tall and shaving!

And I also focused on “boarding experiments” – like Virgin America’s plan to let passengers without carryons go to the head of the line (or close to it).

If you were in charge of the airlines – how would you do it?

Should those who paid the most board first? The bagless? The window-seat passengers? Who?

Northwest’s Letter to Passengers of “Laptop Pilots” Flight

October 27, 2009 | Posted in: Northwest,Passengers,Pilots | 6 comments

UPDATE: The FAA has revoked the pilots’ licenses. They have 10 days to appeal.

Let’s hear a bit more about the passengers who were on last week’s crazy flight – I speak, of course, of the one piloted by a couple of guys who were so busy with their personal laptops they failed to notice they’d overshot Minneapolis by more than 100 miles.

One passenger said it sure was no “Miracle on the Hudson” flight, and suggested that “Capt. Sully” would never be caught in a cockpit, noodling around on a laptop. I agree.

So what about the airline – did Delta/Northwest apologize to its passengers, maybe offer them a freebie?

Yes and yes. Keep reading, to see the letter they received. Northwest’s Letter to Passengers of “Laptop Pilots” Flight

Ten Vampire Vacations for Halloween or Anytime

October 27, 2009 | Posted in: Destinations,Holiday Travel,List | 0 comments

Forbes Traveler has come out with a list of 10 Vampire Vacations – a continuation of the current craze for all things fanged and bloodthirsty.

Anyway the list begins, naturally enough with Transylvania (fly to Bucharest, Romania or other locales)home of the happy-go-lucky Vlad the Impaler.

Also included: New Orleans, home of author Anne Rice; San Francisco (they have a “Vampire Tour”) ; Forks, Washington, the town in the Twilight book/movie series; and Bangor, Maine – which will not seem nearly scary enough to have spawned Stephen King.

Fly to any of these places at the best prices with FareCompare’s Where-to-Go Dealfinder.

Fuel Surcharges Rise on El Al (a Blast from the Past?)

October 27, 2009 | Posted in: Airline News,Fuel Surcharges,Fuel Watch | 0 comments

Israel’s El Al Airlines has announced that, effective this coming Thurday (Oct. 29), it’ll raise its fuel surcharge rates.

The reason: rising oil prices.

Now don’t panic – the price per barrel hasn’t gone crazy the way it did in the spring/summer of 2008 – but it is creeping up.

So El Al is raising surcharges from $10 to $23, depending on the length of the flight. Believe me, this is a trend I’ll be watching very carefully.

72-Hour Southwest Sale Offers Cheap Flights from $50 R/T

October 27, 2009 | Posted in: Airfare News,Southwest | 0 comments

Southwest’s brand new “4th Quarter Sale” is now underway — and it’s a good one.

This 72-hour sale offers fares starting at $25 one-way, and the fares rise depending on the length of your trip. The most expensive sale fares are for trips over 1,000 miles – those are going for just $100 one-way.

Again, this is a 72-hour sale, and tickets must be purchased by the end of the day, Oct. 29.

These fares are good through travel from Dec. 2 through Dec. 16, and for most of January and into early February – further information can be found at Southwest.com.
